Objective
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to divide two-digit numbers (up to 50) by one-digit numbers (2-5) and articulate their understanding using concrete strategies (e.g., grouping and visuals).
Materials Needed
- Counters or small objects (e.g., beans, buttons, or cubes) – about 50 per student
- Whiteboard and markers
- Large “Division Mat” (paper or laminated material divided into “groups”)
- Printed worksheets with simple division problems (e.g., 24 ÷ 4, 36 ÷ 3)
- Dice (1 per pair of students)
Lesson Breakdown (30 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up Activity: “Fair Share Challenge” (5 minutes)
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge of sharing and grouping to connect with division.
- Greet students warmly and introduce the word “division” as a way to share equally. Example: “If we have 10 cookies and 2 friends, how can we share them fairly?”
- Hand 20 counters to each student. Pose a scenario:
- “You have 20 candies to divide among 4 friends. How many does each friend get?”
- Students use counters and their Division Mats to physically divide the candies into groups.
- Ask guiding questions:
- “How many groups do you have?”
- “How many are in each group?”
- “Did any candies get left out?”

2. Guided Practice: Real-Life Division (10 minutes)
Purpose: Teach students step-by-step division while visualizing the process.
- Present a two-digit example on the board: 24 ÷ 4 = ?
- Use this story: “There are 24 apples, and 4 baskets. We need to share the apples equally among the baskets. How many apples will each basket get?”
- Write the problem on the board.
- Model solving it step by step while students follow along with their counters and mats:
- Count out 24 counters.
- Place the counters into 4 groups (one at a time) on the Division Mat.
- Ask students to count how many are in each group and write the answer (6 apples per basket).
Repeat with another example (e.g., 32 ÷ 4). Provide counters and explain each step aloud:
- “First, count out 32.”
- “Now divide it into 4 equal groups.”
- “How many are in each group?” (Answer: 8)
Encourage students to use their counters and work alongside you.
3. Partner Activity: “Roll & Share” Game (8 minutes)
Purpose: Provide students with hands-on practice to reinforce division through play.

Pair students and give each pair:
- A dice
- 30 counters
- A small Division Mat

Explain the rules:
- Roll the dice to get their divisor (e.g., roll a 3 → divide by 3).
- Choose a dividend (number between 10 and 30).
- Use the Division Mat and counters to divide the chosen dividend by the value of the dice roll (rolling 3 means they create 3 groups).
- Write the corresponding division equation on their worksheet (e.g., if they divide 15 counters into 3 groups, they write “15 ÷ 3 = 5”).

Encourage students to take turns rolling the dice and solving problems. Walk around to provide help where needed.
4. Independent Practice: Solve & Explain (5 minutes)
Purpose: Allow students to demonstrate understanding individually in a low-pressure setting.
- Provide each student with a worksheet containing 3 division problems (e.g., 12 ÷ 3 = ?, 24 ÷ 4 = ?, 18 ÷ 2 = ?).
- Ask them to solve using either written work, their counters, or drawings of groups.
- Once they finish solving, ask each student to explain one problem aloud to the group. Encourage them to use math vocabulary like divide, groups, and equal.
5. Wrap-Up & Reflection: “Math Detectives” (2 minutes)
- Ask students:
- “What does it mean to divide?” (Provide guiding questions to help if needed: “Do we share equally? How do we know our answer is right?”)
- “Which part of division do you like best—using counters, drawing, or solving the equation?”
- Celebrate their efforts with a group “Math Champion Cheer!” (e.g., “We’re great at sharing, dividing, and caring!”).
- End by saying, “Next time, we’ll divide even bigger numbers!”
Differentiation
For Struggling Learners:
- Start with smaller dividends (e.g., 10-20) and use visuals to scaffold further.
- Provide hands-on support during partner activities.
For Advanced Learners:
- Use dividends up to 50 and increase the divisor range (6-9).
- Add word problems requiring multi-step reasoning.

- Observe students during the Partner Activity and note their ability to create equal groups and write corresponding equations.
