Holiday Math Fun

Overview

This 30-minute interactive holiday-themed math activity is designed for 1st-grade students (ages 6-7) aligned with US Common Core Standards for Mathematics. The focus is on developing number sense through finding missing numbers, applying skills in addition and subtraction within 20, and identifying number patterns—all while embracing the joy of a holiday season!

Curriculum Area:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (Grade 1 - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6)

• Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Counting and Cardinality

• Understand number sequences and patterns up to 120 (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.A.1).

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of this session, students will:

1. Solve missing number problems in addition and subtraction equations within 20.
2. Complete number patterns with missing numbers up to 50.
3. Practice logical thinking with engaging holiday-themed problems.

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes)

Activity Name: "Holiday Countdown"

• Begin the class by asking students to count out loud from 1 to 20 together. Then, continue with skip counting by twos (2, 4, 6…) up to 20 to set the foundation for number patterns.
• On a small card, write “Help the Elf Count Gifts!” and challenge the students with this:
  • "If Santa has 6 gifts, then 2 more come, how many will there be? (8)"
  • "What if 1 missing gift is found from a stack of 9? (10)"

Encourage them to think quickly and support their answers.

2. Interactive Worksheet Activity (20 minutes)

Activity Name: “Missing Numbers Holiday Adventure”

Provide students with the following worksheet in advance of the holiday to work through collaboratively. Break the exercise into three parts:

Part 1: Counting Christmas Lights (Patterns)

The worksheet shows a picture of several strands of Christmas lights. Each strand is a number pattern with missing bulbs:

Example:
🎄 Strand 1: 2, 4, __, 8, __, __
🎄 Strand 2: 10, 20, __, __, 50

Prompt:
"Can you help string the lights? Write the missing numbers!"
Student will complete the patterns, such as filling in missing numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12). Highlight the even-number rule.

Part 2: Santa’s Sleigh Addition and Subtraction

Santa is flying through snowy clouds, but some presents have fallen out of his sleigh! Your job is to find out how many presents are left!

Example:
🎁 Santa starts with 10 presents. He drops 3. How many presents does Santa have now? ___ (10 - 3 = 7).

🎁 The next town gives Santa 5 presents to add to his bag that already holds 8. How many presents does he have now? ___ (8 + 5 = 13).

Prompt:
"Help Santa check his math and keep the presents moving!"

Part 3: The Gingerbread Number House (Number Sentences)

A gingerbread house is decorated with numbered candy canes. However, some candy canes are blank, and students must fill them in by solving addition or subtraction problems.

Example:

• Candy Cane 1: 6 + __ = 9
• Candy Cane 2: 12 - __ = 8

Prompt:
"Finish the gingerbread candy canes by completing the missing numbers!"

3. Wrap-Up and Reflection (5 minutes)

• Go over the worksheet together. Give praise for effort and correct solutions. Celebrate with a "firework clap" (make an explosion clap sound when celebrating).
• Extend the activity by asking the students to come up with their own holiday-themed number problems to challenge each other.
