Lesson Description
Students will engage in guided discussions to identify everyday problems that need solutions. They will collaboratively brainstorm and describe problems they’ve observed in school, home, or community environments. This will set the foundation for the upcoming Inventor Project where students will design innovative solutions.

Lesson Procedure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by sharing a familiar story or video snippet about an invention that solved a common problem (e.g., the invention of the umbrella, pencil sharpener, or the traffic light).
- Ask the student:
“Can you think of a problem that these inventions solve? What other problems do you see around you today?”
- Write a simple definition: "A problem is something that makes life harder or causes trouble."
2. Guided Discussion - Identifying Problems (8 minutes)
- Using the chart paper or whiteboard, engage the student in discussing everyday settings: classroom, home, park, or grocery store.
- Prompt with direct questions:
- Have you ever felt something was hard or frustrating to do?
- Is there something that could be easier or safer?
- Record 3-5 problems that the student identifies. Use visual drawings or keywords to make ideas clear.
- Make sure to model complete sentence responses to encourage expressive communication aligned with CCSS.
3. Brainstorming Activity (10 minutes)
- Introduce the “Problem Brainstorm Worksheet.”
- Assist the student in filling out the observation and problem sections for 2-3 problems noted earlier.
- Encourage creative thinking by asking:
If you could invent anything to fix this problem, what might it do?
- Write down their initial solution ideas but emphasize that ideas can change or grow later during the Inventor Project.
4. Review and Reflect (5 minutes)
- Review the recorded problems and ideas with the student.
- Ask the student to explain one problem and its potential solution in their own words.
- Provide positive feedback by reinforcing their clear expression of ideas and problem recognition skills.
5. Closing (2 minutes)
- Preview the next lesson by explaining:
“Next time, we will start making our first sketches for your invention! Today was about finding the problems we want to solve.”
- Encourage the student to observe more problems they notice between now and then.

- Informal formative assessment during discussion: Check if the student participates actively, listens, and responds using full sentences.
- Worksheet completion: Review if the student correctly identifies problems and can articulate initial solution ideas.
- Reflective answer at lesson end: Ability to describe a problem and solution clearly.
