Lesson Focus: Reading and analyzing the short story Fazid's Stick from the Let’s Read Performance Level 6 reader.
Objectives
By the end of this 30-minute lesson, students will:
- Develop reading fluency by reading and understanding Fazid’s Stick.
- Enhance vocabulary by identifying and understanding the meanings of challenging words.
- Improve critical thinking skills by analyzing illustrations from the text to infer additional details.
- Practice active reading strategies, including annotation and group discussion.
Methodology
1. Recap (3 minutes)
Purpose: Engage prior knowledge and prepare students for the lesson.
- Begin by asking the students:
- “Have you ever inherited something meaningful or special from someone? How did it make you feel?”
- Encourage a few students to briefly share their experiences while maintaining time boundaries.
- Explain that today's story (Fazid’s Stick) features a boy who receives something special and learns a lesson.
2. Introduction (5 minutes)
Purpose: Set the stage for reading and clarify expectations.
- Display the title of the story Fazid’s Stick on the smartboard or whiteboard.
- Briefly discuss the importance of active reading:
- “As we read today, we’ll look out for new or tricky words to underline, and we’ll also think about what we can learn from the pictures in the story.”
- Explain tasks to the students:
- First, we will read the story together.
- As we read, you will underline difficult words and later write down their meanings.
- We will focus on picture analysis and think about what the illustrations tell us about the story.
3. Development (Primary Task - 15 minutes)
Purpose: Guide reading, vocabulary exploration, and critical thinking.
A. Shared Reading (7 minutes)
- The teacher will read the first two paragraphs aloud with proper intonation and expression to model fluency.
- Students will then take turns reading aloud, paragraph by paragraph. Ensure every student has a chance to participate.
- Assist with unfamiliar words or phrases as necessary, but keep the flow of reading intact.
B. Identifying Difficult Words (5 minutes)
- Have students underline words they find challenging during the reading. Examples might include: intricate, cherish, legacy.
- After reading, conduct a quick class discussion to share and list difficult words on the board.
C. Picture Analysis (3 minutes)
- Display an image from the story (or refer to one in their books).
- Ask open-ended questions:
- “What do you notice about Fazid’s body language in this picture?”
- “How does the artist show emotion in this scene?”
- Encourage students to interpret mood, feelings, and actions based on visual clues.
4. Written Task (5 minutes)
Purpose: Solidify vocabulary understanding and encourage personal connection to the story.
- Assign students to write in their notebooks:
- Choose 3 difficult words from the story, write their meanings, and use them in original sentences.
- Briefly (in 2-3 sentences) explain why Fazid’s stick was important to him.
5. Homework (2 minutes)
Purpose: Extend learning and reinforce comprehension at home.
- Students will:
- Reread Fazid’s Stick at home for fluency practice.
- Draw a picture of Fazid and his stick in one specific scene of their choice. Write one sentence below the drawing explaining why they chose that scene.
Assessment Strategies
- Monitor students’ participation during reading and discussions.
- Check written tasks for understanding of vocabulary and connection to the text.
- Review homework for creativity and insight into the story.

Differentiation Strategies
- For advanced readers: Encourage deeper exploration of the text by having them explain how Fazid’s emotions change over the course of the story.
- For struggling readers: Assign them a partner to read the paragraphs together before reading aloud to the class. Provide simpler vocabulary definitions when necessary.
- For visual learners: Emphasize the picture analysis activity to help them connect with the story.
