Overview

This lesson focuses on the theme of the latest technology, aiming to enhance students' vocabulary, conversation, and comprehension skills while discussing modern gadgets. This aligns with Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts in Grade 8, specifically in the areas of speaking and listening, reading informational texts, and vocabulary acquisition.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

1. Identify and correctly use vocabulary related to modern technology.
2. Engage in meaningful discussions about the technology they use.
3. Analyze and respond to informational text about technology.
4. Express and compare personal reactions to technology-related facts.

• Photos of technology items (e.g., e-reader, fitness tracker, games console, etc.)
• Vocabulary word cards
• Audio file for pronunciation check (track with vocabulary words and their pronunciations)
• Facts about technology handout
• Whiteboard and markers
• Student notebooks or digital devices for note-taking

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

1. Introduction: Start with a brief discussion about how technology impacts their daily lives.
2. Icebreaker Question: Ask students to share one piece of technology they use daily and why they find it useful.

Activities

Activity 1: Vocabulary Matching (10 minutes)

1. Instruction: Hand out photos of technology items and matching vocabulary word cards.
2. Task: Students work individually or in pairs to match photos (A-L) with words (e-reader, fitness tracker, games console, etc.).
3. Check: Play an audio file with the correct matches. Students listen, check their answers, and repeat the words out loud for pronunciation practice.

Activity 2: Small Group Discussions (10 minutes)

1. Set Up: Divide the students into small groups of 3-4.
2. Task: Each group discusses the following questions:
   • How many things with screens are there in your home?
   • What are they, and whose are they?
   • How many printers/speakers/games consoles are there? Where are they in your house?
   • Have you got a smartphone? If so, what kind?
3. Share: A representative from each group will share their findings with the rest of the class.

Activity 3: Reading and Reaction (10 minutes)

1. Instruction: Distribute the "Facts about Technology" handout.
2. Task: Students read the handout and mark each fact with K (knew it), S (surprised), or W (worries).
3. Pair Work: In pairs, compare answers and discuss any differences in reactions.

Activity 4: Deeper Discussion (8 minutes)

1. Pair Discussion: Students discuss the following questions in pairs:
   • Which of the facts surprises you the most?
   • Which of the facts worries you the most?
2. Share: Volunteers share their responses with the class. The teacher can facilitate a brief discussion on why certain facts might be surprising or worrisome.

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

1. Reflection: Ask students to reflect on what they've learned about technology and how it affects their lives.
2. Exit Ticket: Have students write down one new piece of information they learned about technology today and how it might impact their use of technology in the future.
