Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 7 in the unit "Strider Bike Adventures". Lesson Title: Balancing Techniques Lesson Description: Students will engage in activities that focus on balancing on the strider bike. They will practice balancing on one foot while stationary and learn how to maintain balance while moving slowly.

Mastering Balance Skills

Lesson Overview

Unit: Strider Bike Adventures (Lesson 3 of 7)
Age Group: Kindergarten (Reception, EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage)
Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 16 students
Focus Area: Physical Development – EYFS Framework, Development Matters (Balancing and Coordination)

EYFS Framework Links

  • Physical Development – Gross Motor Skills:

    • Develop core strength, balance, coordination, and agility.
    • Practise fundamental movement skills such as balancing, navigating space, and controlled movement.
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development:

    • Build confidence in movement and develop perseverance in new physical challenges.
    • Encourage turn-taking and cooperative play.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Practise balancing on one foot while stationary to develop core control.
  2. Learn how to maintain their balance while moving slowly on a Strider bike.
  3. Develop confidence and coordination when transitioning from static to dynamic movement.
  4. Improve focus and spatial awareness through interactive movement games.

Equipment Needed

  • 16 Strider bikes (one per student)
  • 16 safety helmets (properly fitted)
  • Cones or markers to define practice areas
  • Chalk or floor tape to create balance lines
  • Music player (optional, for rhythm-based balancing activities)

Lesson Breakdown (30 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (5 Minutes)

  1. Gather students in a semi-circle and introduce today’s focus: balancing on the Strider bike.
  2. Ask students to stand on one foot and count to five – repeat for both legs.
  3. Play “Flamingo Freeze” – students balance on one leg while music plays; when the music stops, they must hold their position.
  4. Explain how strong balance helps them ride safely and smoothly.

Key Teaching Point: “Can you feel how your body wobbles a little before finding its balance? That’s your muscles working to keep you steady!”

2. Skill Development – Stationary Balance (10 Minutes)

Activity 1: Strider Bike Stance Practice

  1. Students sit on their bikes with feet flat on the ground (legs at a 90-degree angle).
  2. Lift one foot for three seconds, then switch.
  3. Repeat while counting together: “1…2…3… change!”.

Activity 2: Slow-Motion Gliders

  1. Students push off gently with both feet, then lift them for a brief glide.
  2. Challenge: Can they go farther each time without touching the ground?
  3. Use cones to create a pathway and encourage them to balance while moving slowly.

Teacher’s Tip: Walk among students and remind them to keep their eyes forward, not on their feet.

3. Applied Practice – Balance Challenges (10 Minutes)

Activity 3: The Snail Race (Speed = Slow and Controlled)

  1. Students race from one cone to another, but the slowest rider wins!
  2. They must use controlled pushes to maintain balance and avoid stopping.

Activity 4: Tightrope Riders

  1. Use chalk or tape to draw a straight line.
  2. Students must ride along the line while balancing and keeping their wheels straight.

Encouragement: Celebrate small improvements – even wobbles show progress!

4. Cool Down & Reflection (5 Minutes)

  1. Gather in a circle and discuss:
    • “What helped you stay balanced?”
    • “What was tricky about balancing while moving?”
  2. Stretching Exercises:
    • Toe touches while holding the handlebars.
    • Side stretches with hands in the air.
  3. End with a group cheer: “We are balance champions!”

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessing Progress

  • Observe students’ ability to balance without excessive wobbling.
  • Encourage verbal reflections: “How does balancing on the bike feel different from standing on one foot?”

Supporting Different Skill Levels

  • For beginners: Allow them to practise shorter glides before attempting full balance challenges. Offer hand support if needed.
  • For confident riders: Challenge them with trickier balancing tasks (e.g., lifting both feet quickly while stationary).

Teacher Reflection Notes

After the lesson, consider:
✅ Did students gain confidence in their balance?
✅ Were they able to hold balance while in motion?
✅ How can we build on these skills in Lesson 4?

By making balancing fun and age-appropriate, this lesson is designed to instil confidence and prepare students for more advanced Strider bike skills in future lessons! 🚴‍♂️
