Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Attendance
   Start with a warm greeting and quickly take attendance.

2. Engage Students with a Question
   Ask: "Can anyone tell me why capital letters are important in writing?" Note student responses on the board.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Explain the Purpose
   Introduce the importance of capitalization in writing: clarity, formality, and making a good impression.

2. The Rules of Capitalization
   Go through key capitalization rules:

   • First word in a sentence.
   • Proper nouns (names of people, places, brands).
   • Days, months, holidays (not seasons).
   • Titles (books, movies, songs) - capitalize the first and important words.
   • Pronoun "I".

3. Interactive Demonstration
   Use the projector to display a pre-written paragraph with incorrect capitalization. As a class, identify and correct the errors, discussing why each correction is necessary.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Whole-Class Activity
   Distribute the "Capitalization Challenge" worksheet.

   • In pairs, students will circle correct capital letters and underline those needing correction in a provided text.
   • Walk around the room to provide guidance and feedback.

2. Share Findings
   Invite pairs to share corrections with the class. Discuss any discrepancies and praise correct applications of rules.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Practice Paragraph Editing
   Hand out the paragraphs for individual editing. Each student will rewrite the paragraph with correct capitalization in their notebooks.

   • Encourage the use of colored pencils to differentiate between corrected errors and original text.

2. Peer Review
   Have students pair up to check each other's work. They should discuss any missed corrections and explain the reason behind each change.

Conclusion (6 minutes)

1. Recap and Q&A
   Review key rules of capitalization on the whiteboard. Prompt students to ask any lingering questions.

2. Exit Ticket
   Ask students to write one rule of capitalization they learned today and one example of its use on a sticky note and place it on the board before leaving.

Extension Activity (Optional/Homework)

• Creative Writing Prompt
  Students write a short story using at least ten of the capitalization rules discussed. Encourage creativity and proper use of capitals. This can be continued at home and submitted in the next class.

• Observe student participation during discussions and guided practice.
• Evaluate the completed "Capitalization Challenge" worksheets.
• Review and provide feedback on the edited paragraph and exit tickets.
