Lesson Timeline & Activities

1. Introduction & Objective Review (5 minutes)

Begin with a brief warm-up question:
"Have you ever worked through a tough problem with a friend? What steps did you take together?"
State today’s goal: "Today, we are learning about the 10 Steps of the AVID Tutorial Process, which is a method to help you and your classmates solve problems together."
Show the lesson’s success criteria on the board or slide.

2. Interactive Slide Presentation (12 minutes)

Method: Engage students with an animated slide deck illustrating each of the 10 steps one at a time.

Steps to Cover:

Present your problem or question.
Clarify understanding with questions and restatements.
Take notes and identify key information.
Share what you know.
Ask for specific help.
Collaborate with group members.
Summarize the group’s findings.
Identify next steps or remaining questions.

Active Engagement: After each step, ask a quick question:

3. Collaborative Reflection & Discussion (8 minutes)

Divide students into 7 groups of 3 (or 6 groups with 3 and 1 group with 3, adjusting as needed).
Assign each group 1 or 2 steps to discuss using guiding prompts:
- What does this step involve?
- Why is it important to the tutorial process?
- How could you use it outside of class?
Groups will summarize their insights on chart paper or whiteboard space.
Bring the class back together.
Each group shares their reflections briefly (1 minute per group).
Teacher records key points on a master chart visible to the whole class.

4. Individual Quick Write Reflection (3 minutes)

Prompt students to write in their journals:
"Explain one step you think is most important for learning and why."
Encourage them to connect it with their own experiences.

5. Wrap-Up & Exit Ticket (2 minutes)

Revisit the success criteria.
Exit ticket (verbal or written):
"Name 2 steps of the AVID Tutorial Process and say one way these steps help with learning."
Collect exit tickets or have students share answers aloud for quick formative assessment.

Assessment & Feedback

Informal observation during group discussions.
Review of group reflection summaries for understanding.
