This lesson is called "Movement and Melody." It is a 3rd-grade lesson that should be 47 minutes long. We will start the lesson with "The Cowboy Dance" by Danny Go on YouTube. This will be our warm-up. We will then run through the four military songs we have worked on so far: army, marines, navy, and air force. We will then switch over to MusicPlayOnline for the rest of the class. We will do our melody assessment using the "Match the Melody" game on MusicPlay's 4th September lesson. We will use level 2a, which uses the solfege syllables mi, so, and la. With the remaining time after our assessment, we will use MusicPlay's modules 11 (Teach "Rocky Mountain"), 12 (Learn dance for "Rocky Mountain"), 13 (song and dance together for "Rocky Mountain"), and 14 (Playing "Rocky Mountain" on Boomwhackers). If there are a few spare minutes at the end, we can play a quick round of "Keep the Beat in you Feet." I am using the following National Core Arts Standards: MU:Pr4.2.3a: Demonstrate understanding of the structure in music selected for performance. MU:Pr5.1.3a: Apply teacher-provided and collaboratively developed criteria to evaluate musical works or performances. MU:Cr1.1.3a: Improvise rhythmic and melodic patterns. MU:Re7.2.3a: Demonstrate and explain how responses to music are informed by the structure, the use of elements of music, and the context. MU:Pr6.1.3a: Perform music with expression and technical accuracy. My student objectives are as follows: Students will identify the main melodic rhythmic patterns in the four military branch songs and “Rocky Mountain.” Students will perform the dance for “Rocky Mountain” and play boomwhackers in time with the song. Students will express their understanding of melody, rhythm, and patriotic themes through song and movement. I need essential questions, primary and secondary vocabulary, assessment evidence, instructional strategies, and differentiation for this lesson.
