Path to Purpose

Curriculum Area and Level

Career Development and Readiness
Aligned with Common Core Standards:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.1: Prepare for and participate effectively in conversations and collaborations.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.2: Write informative or explanatory texts to examine and clearly convey topics.

Grade Band: Grades 10–12 (High School)

Lesson Objective

To spark students’ interest in future career paths by helping them identify their passions, strengths, and practical career options, while emphasizing decision-making skills.

Time: 2 Minutes

Materials Needed:

  • Bellringer question (projected or on whiteboard)
  • Visual aid with the phrase: “Your Career Superpower!”
  • Timer visible to students

Lesson Structure (High-Impact in 2 Minutes!)

Step 1: Power Bellringer (30 Seconds)

  • Projected Question: “If you could do only one thing every day for the next 10 years and get paid for it, what would it be?”
    • Students will silently reflect and jot down their answers on a sticky note (or in a journal, if preferred). This quick question is designed to provoke curiosity and self-awareness in relation to their passions.

Step 2: Rapid Engagement Visualization (45 Seconds)

  • Teacher briefly points to the visual aid with the phrase, “Your Career Superpower!” and explains:
    • “Every career choice starts with knowing your personal strengths. Think of yourself as a superhero—what’s your superpower?”
    • Students will then share one word aloud (e.g., organization, creativity, helping people). This word activates critical thinking about skills.

Step 3: Inspirational Wrap-Up Call-to-Action (45 Seconds)

  • Teacher:
“You just connected your passion and talent to your potential career path. Your next step? Research three careers that match what you wrote down today, and bring them to our next session. Remember—real superheroes become great because they prepare!”

Assessment

Even in this micro-lesson, students will actively engage in self-reflection and verbal participation to connect their interests and talents to career paths. Teachers can use sticky notes as a formative assessment to collect insights about students’ emerging ideas on their career readiness.

Differentiation

For students needing additional support, encourage them to use broad ideas (e.g., “helping others”) rather than focusing on specific careers. For advanced students, challenge them by introducing the concept of transferable skills and asking how their "superpower" might apply to more than one type of career.

Teacher’s Bonus Tip

End the session with an upbeat tone of encouragement. Example: “Every career journey starts with small steps like the one you just took. The remarkable thing is—you’re already thinking like a professional!”
