Prefixes and Evidence

Objective

Students will:

• Identify and analyze words with the prefixes pre- and re- in a grade-appropriate text.
• Use context clues to determine the meaning of prefixed words.
• Cite textual evidence to support their understanding of vocabulary in context.

This lesson aligns with the following Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (Grade 8):

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.8.4.A: Use common Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word.

Materials

• Printed copies of a selected short text (~300-400 words) containing at least 6-8 words with pre- and re- prefixes. The text should be engaging and appropriate for 8th graders, e.g., a historical excerpt, scientific passage, or a contemporary narrative.
• Highlighters or colored pencils (2 different colors)
• Student notebooks or graphic organizers

Lesson Breakdown (55 minutes)

1. Introduction (8 minutes)

• Engage: Begin with a quick warm-up asking students to share any words they know with prefixes pre- and re- (write on the board, e.g., preview, reuse).
• Explain: Briefly define the prefixes:
  • pre- means “before” or “in advance”
  • re- means “again” or “back”
• Connect to vocabulary development and context clues as tools to understand unfamiliar words and prepare for academic reading and writing.

2. Guided Practice – Prefix Hunt (15 minutes)

• Distribute copies of the short text to students.
• Instruct students to:
  • Read the text silently first (5 minutes).

3. Collaborative Analysis (12 minutes)

• Each pair will choose 2-3 prefixed words from their text, then:
  • Discuss what the prefix means in context.
  • Write down the meaning they infer using the sentence(s) highlighted as evidence.
  • Practice citing evidence by copying the exact sentence(s) that helped their inference, using quotation marks.
• Pairs share one example aloud with the class to reinforce the practice.

4. Independent Application (12 minutes)

• Students work individually to complete a short graphic organizer with columns:
  1. Prefixed word
  2. Prefix and definition
  3. Inferred meaning using context clues
  4. Evidence sentence(s) cited from the text
• Encourage precise and neat work emphasizing citation format and textual analysis skills.

5. Wrap Up and Assessment (8 minutes)

• Review with a whole-class discussion:
  • Ask volunteers to share their favorite word from the text and explain how the prefix and context clues helped them.
• Collect the graphic organizers for formative assessment to check student understanding of prefixes, context clues, and citing evidence.

• For advanced learners: Challenge them to find additional words with prefixes or to find words with double prefixes (e.g., “pre-revolutionary”).
