Reading with Fluency
Overview
Grade Level: 1st Grade
Subject: Social Studies Integration with Literacy
Duration: 30 Minutes
Curriculum Focus: Amplify phonics skills for decoding, tricky words, developing fluency through phrasing and intonation.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Decode and blend phonics sounds to read new words.
- Identify and read tricky words.
- Use appropriate fluency (rate, accuracy, and prosody) when reading grade-level text.
Materials
- Short story text featuring simple sentences with grade-level vocabulary
- Flashcards with tricky words
- Markers and chart paper
- A small puppet or stuffed animal to assist reading aloud
Standards
Common Core State Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.4: Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Lesson Procedure
Introduction (5 minutes)
Teacher's Script:
"Hello, first graders! Today, we're going on a reading adventure. We'll help our little puppet friend, Sam, explore a new story. As we read, we'll learn to solve puzzle words using our phonics superpowers!"
- Introduce the puppet, "Sam," to the class. Let Sam say hello and express excitement about the adventure.
- Explain that Sam needs help to read tricky words and that together, they'll practice reading smoothly and with expression.
Phonics and Tricky Words (10 minutes)
-
Phonics Warm-Up:
- Display a few simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words on the board (e.g., hat, dog, sun).
- Use blending sounds to decode these words together as a class.
-
Tricky Words Practice:
- Display flashcards with tricky words (e.g., said, where, they) that cannot be easily decoded.
- Use a chant or song to help students memorize these words.
-
Activity:
- Have students practice saying each tricky word with Sam, who gives them a wink of encouragement.
Reading with Fluency (10 minutes)
-
Model Fluent Reading:
- Use a short story text and read a passage aloud to the class, demonstrating fluent reading with proper rate, accuracy, and prosody.
- Emphasize "scooping up" words into phrases to create a natural flow.
-
Group Practice:
- Divide students into small groups and give each group a line of the text wherein they practice “scooping” and reading aloud with their best expression to Sam.
-
Choral Reading:
- Conduct a choral reading of the text where the entire class reads aloud together, supporting each other to use appropriate phrasing and intonation.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Gather the students back together and have Sam express how exciting the adventure was.
- Ask students to share what they found most fun or challenging.
- Praise their efforts in using their phonics decoding and tricky word solving skills.
Teacher's Closing Script:
"You all did an amazing job helping Sam read the story. Remember, every time you read, try to use your fluency skills and see the words as friends waiting to tell you their story. Keep practicing, and soon you'll be storytelling experts!"
Assessment
- Observation of students during small group and choral reading to assess decoding skill and fluency.
- Informal check of students' ability to recognize and read tricky words correctly.
Extensions and Differentiation
- For advanced readers: Provide a more challenging text with slightly longer phrases.
- For struggling readers: Offer additional practice with phonics games and repeated reading of simpler sentences with teacher support.
Incorporate music and rhythm to enhance the fluency lesson, allowing students who benefit from auditory learning styles to engage more deeply with the material.
