Lesson Overview

In this 20-minute lesson, 2nd-grade students will engage in solving addition and subtraction word problems. The focus will be on developing strategies that utilize their understanding of place value and arithmetic properties.

Materials Needed

• Whiteboard and markers
• Set of 13 math story cards (one per student)
• Mini whiteboards and markers for each student
• Counting blocks or counters (optional for tactile learners)
• Timer or clock

Lesson Breakdown

Introduction (2 minutes)

1. Greeting and Engagement:
   Begin with a warm greeting to the students. Tell them they will become math detectives today to solve interesting puzzles using numbers.

2. Objective Sharing:
   Explain that they will practice adding and subtracting numbers using word problems. Highlight the importance of being able to solve real-life problems with math.

Direct Instruction (5 minutes)

1. Explain the Concept:
   Discuss how word problems are just stories with numbers. They describe situations where people need to add or subtract. Emphasize that understanding the story is the first step in solving the problem.

2. Model Problem Solving:
   Write a simple word problem on the board:
   "Anna has 23 apples. She gives 15 apples to her friend. How many apples does she have left?"

   • Read the problem aloud.
   • Underline key information together (23 apples, gives away 15).
   • Draw a pictorial representation using circles for apples.
   • Solve the problem using both number sentences and a simple picture. Show subtraction as taking away.

3. Demonstrate Adding Strategy:
   Use another problem:
   "Tom has 34 marbles. He buys 12 more marbles at the store. How many marbles does he have now?"

   • Highlight key information (34 marbles and 12 more).
   • Use counting blocks to physically add groups if necessary.
   • Show how to add using place value by grouping tens and ones.

Guided Practice (6 minutes)

1. Group Activity:
   Distribute the math story cards. Pair students to solve at least two word problems together using mini whiteboards for their work.

2. Circulate and Support:
   Walk around as students work, providing hints and encouragement. Encourage use of place value and visualization methods discussed.

3. Encourage Different Strategies:
   Ask pairs to explain their strategy and whether they visualized, counted blocks, or used drawings.

Conclusion (4 minutes)

1. Class Discussion:
   Invite a few pairs to share their solved problems with the class, explaining their strategy and solution.

2. Reinforce Learning:
   Recap what strategies were used today (e.g., drawing pictures, using counters, writing number sentences).

3. Celebrate Success:
   Congratulate students for becoming word problem solvers and engage them in a brief discussion on when they might use these skills outside of school.

Extension Ideas (if time allows)
