Lesson Overview

In this 45-minute session, 3rd-grade students will explore the historical and cultural significance of the Star-Spangled Banner during the War of 1812. The lesson connects history to art by engaging students in a hands-on drawing activity where they will interpret the flag’s symbolism. This is lesson 2 of 5 in the unit “Understanding the War of 1812.”

Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (7 minutes)

• Begin with a brief question: "Have you ever seen a special flag? What do you think a flag can tell us about a country?"
• Show an image of the Star-Spangled Banner. Tell the story that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that became the national anthem during the War of 1812.
• Read a short (1-page) age-appropriate passage aloud about how the flag was a symbol of hope and resilience during the war.
• Ask students to listen for why the flag was important.

2. Guided Discussion: Symbolism in the Flag (10 minutes)

• Display the flag image on the board.
• Point out stars, stripes, and the size of the flag.
• Ask: "What do you notice? What might the stars and stripes mean?"
• Write student responses on chart paper.
• Explain the symbolism briefly: stars represent states united, stripes show the original colonies, and the flag stood strong despite the battle.
• Relate this to the idea of resilience – never giving up.

3. Drawing Activity: Design Your Symbol (20 minutes)

• Instructions: "Imagine you are creating a new flag that shows your own family, school, or community’s strength and hope. Use colors, shapes, and symbols that tell a story."
• Give students drawing paper and art supplies.
• Encourage them to think about what colors or images make them feel brave or united.
• Circulate and prompt students as needed: “Why did you choose that symbol? What does it mean to you?”

4. Sharing & Reflection (6 minutes)

• Invite volunteers to share their drawings and explain their symbolism.
• Encourage respectful listening and questions from peers.
• Recap how flags and symbols help tell stories and bring people together, just like the original Star-Spangled Banner did.

5. Closing (2 minutes)

• Summarize key points: the Star-Spangled Banner was more than a flag — it was a symbol of courage during the War of 1812.
