Learning Objectives

- Understand the concept of sustainable farming and why it matters to community health (PYP Phase 3: Science - Sharing the Planet).

Success Criteria
Students will be able to:

- Reflect and articulate one new idea they can apply to help support sustainable farming or environmental health.

- Dyslexia-friendly text about sustainable farming (with clear fonts, larger size, and illustrated vocabulary)

Lesson Breakdown
1. Connect / Engage (10 minutes)
- Warm-up Discussion:
Begin by asking: "What do you think it means to farm in a way that helps the Earth and the community?"
- Show 4-5 picture cards of different farming practices (mix sustainable and non-sustainable).
- Ask students to identify which practices might be better for the Earth and why.
Differentiation: Use dyslexia-friendly printed cards with simple captions for visual learners and those with reading challenges. Allow verbal sharing or drawing to support students with expressive difficulties.
2. Explore / Explain (15 minutes)
- Read Aloud & Shared Reading:
Using a dyslexia-friendly text, read a short passage about sustainable farming, highlighting practices like crop rotation, composting, natural pest control, and water conservation.
- Pause frequently to ask comprehension questions and encourage students to connect the ideas to what they’ve seen or heard before.
- Record new vocabulary (such as “sustainable,” “compost,” “organic”) on chart paper with visuals.
Differentiation: Pair advanced readers with peers for peer-assisted reading. Emphasize oral explanations for those who struggle with reading.
3. Inquiry & Group Brainstorm (20 minutes)
- Group Activity: Divide students into small groups (3-4 per group).
- Provide each group with chart paper and markers. Prompt: "Brainstorm ways we can help promote sustainable farming or sustainability in our homes and communities."
- Encourage them to think beyond farming, linking it to daily choices like reducing waste, supporting local foods, and conserving water.
- Teacher circulates, records ideas, and supports deeper questioning.
Differentiation: For learners needing support, offer sentence starters (e.g., "One way we can help is..."). Use a graphic organizer to help organize thoughts visually.
4. Create & Reflect (10 minutes)
- Personal Project: Each student creates a mini-poster or booklet page detailing one way they will help promote sustainability. This could be a drawing, written sentence, or combination.
- Share reflections aloud or in pairs: "What did you learn today? How can you make a difference?"
Differentiation: Allow multiple modes of expression—drawing, dictating to teacher, or writing depending on student ability.
5. Closing & Assessment (5 minutes)
- Summarize key ideas by revisiting the success criteria.
- Ask students to share one thing they committed to doing this week that supports sustainable farming or the environment.
- Collect mini-posters/booklet pages for formative assessment of understanding and participation.
