Lesson Structure

Starter Activity – Coin Discovery (10 mins)

Engage:

• Begin by showing a small pouch filled with real and plastic UK coins.
• Ask: "What do we use these for?" to spark discussion.
• Allow students to hold and observe coins in pairs.
• Encourage them to describe what they notice: "What do you see on the coin? What colour is it?"

Main Lesson Activities

Activity 1: Coin Exploration (15 mins)

Materials: Large coin posters, real and plastic coins, magnifying glasses

🟢 Step 1 – Observation (5 mins)

• Show large coin posters (one at a time), stating the name and value of each coin.
• Place real/plastic coins on each table for students to examine up-close.
• Ask: "What do you notice about this coin? How is it different from the others?"

🟢 Step 2 – Matching (10 mins)

• Give each pair of students a set of printed coin images.
• Ask them to match each coin to the correct coin poster.
• Support students in describing key differences (e.g., “The 1p and 2p coins are brown; the 5p coin is the smallest").

Activity 2: Coin Sorting Game (15 mins)

Materials: Coin sorting trays, real coins, sorting mats with labels (£1, 50p, etc.)

🟢 Step 1 – Sorting Challenge (7 mins)

• Each group is given a mixed pile of coins.
• Their task: Sort the coins into the correct categories based on type and value.
• Introduce friendly competition: "Which group can correctly sort their coins the fastest?"

• Discuss what they noticed:
  • Which coins were easiest to sort?
  • Which coins look similar but have different values?

• Display images of coins on the board.

• Students hold up the correct coin or point to the image.

🟢 Step 2 – Reflection (5 mins)
