Lesson 1: Exploring EA Words

Objective

Students will:

1. Identify EA vowel teams in words and practice their long vowel sound.

Materials Required

• Word cards with EA words (e.g., beach, team, dream, peach, speak).
• Whiteboard or chart paper with prepared sentences missing EA words.

Lesson Flow

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Activity: Sound Safari

• Gather the students in a circle and say: "Today we are going on a safari to find words that have a secret sound—a long /ē/ or long /ā/. Let’s listen carefully for clues!"
• Show or say words aloud one at a time (e.g., "beach, apple, team, tree, dream"). Ask: “Which word has the long EE sound? What letters make that sound?”
• Underline ‘EA’ on the board in the correct words and emphasize: “This is a vowel team. The letters E and A work together to make a long sound, like in the word 'dream.’”

2. Main Activity (15 minutes)

Part A: EA Detective Game (7 minutes)

1. Hand each student a small “Team Word Detective” badge (a fun accessory to make the activity engaging).
2. Spread pre-prepared EA word cards (around 10) on a table or on the board.
3. Say: "You are now detectives! Your job is to find words with the EA vowel team that make the long /ē/ sound."
4. Students take turns picking cards and reading them aloud.
   • If correct, the student places the card under the "EA Word Collection" column on the board.
   • If incorrect, they discuss with their teammate detectives to try again.

Optional Challenge for Advanced Students: Introduce sentences with blanks where EA words are missing. Ask them to select cards to complete the sentences.

Part B: Sentence Building (8 minutes)

1. Provide each student with a mini whiteboard and marker (or paper). Write one EA word on the board (e.g., team).
