Warm-Up and Cool-Down

Objective

By the end of this 7-minute session, 10th grade students will:

Design a personalized running warm-up and cool-down routine targeting major muscle groups used in running.
Explain how each exercise supports cardiovascular health and muscle flexibility.
Demonstrate understanding of heart health and stretching principles aligned with Common Core standards.

Materials Needed

Stopwatch or timer app
Cones, markers, or designated space for movement
Visual chart/handout outlining major running muscle groups (quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors)
Whiteboard or poster for explanation

Lesson Breakdown (7 Minutes)

1. Introduction & Objective (1 min)

Briefly introduce the purpose: importance of warm-up and cool-down to protect heart health and improve muscle flexibility specifically for running.
Refer to how a good routine supports the cardiovascular system by preparing the heart and lungs for exercise and aids recovery by returning heart rate to resting and preventing injuries.

2. Activity Setup (30 sec)

Students form pairs or small groups of 2.
Hand out visual chart identifying the major muscle groups used in running.

3. Warm-Up Design Activity (2 min)

Each pair designs 2 dynamic stretches/warm-up exercises targeting quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and hip flexors (example: leg swings, high knees).
Teacher circulates to guide accuracy and safe technique.
Ask students to say aloud which muscles are targeted and why activating them first benefits heart rate and oxygen flow (builds gradually).

4. Cool-Down Design Activity (2 min)

Each pair designs 2 static stretches targeting the same muscle groups with a focus on flexibility and controlled heart rate reduction (e.g., standing quadriceps stretch, hamstring stretch).
Students explain why holding stretches post-run improves muscle length and aids recovery — preventing stiffness & reducing cardiovascular strain.

5. Sharing & Explanation (1 min 30 sec)

Select 2-3 groups to quickly share their routines and reasoning, encouraging peer learning and clear communication (aligns with CCSS speaking and listening).
Teacher reinforces link between the warm-up/cool-down and heart health/muscle flexibility, briefly summarizing scientific principles in student-friendly language.

6. Quick Reflection & Wrap Up (30 sec)

Students jot down one new fact or insight about cardiovascular health or muscle flexibility learned today on an exit slip or form a quick verbal “one take-away” sentence.

Assessment

Monitor paired activity for accuracy of muscle group targeting and exercise appropriateness.
Use sharing time to assess verbal communication clarity according to CCSS.SL.9-10.1.
Exit slips or quick reflective responses to check content understanding aligned to CCSS.RST.9-10.3.

Extension Idea (Optional for Homework)

Students create a short video (1-2 mins) demonstrating their warm-up/cool-down routine with voice-over explaining each step’s cardiovascular and muscle flexibility benefit. This integrates ELA technology skills with PE content.
