Teaching Instructions

I want the lesson to focus on students writing a simple, complete sentence. My students like hands-on activities. They are English Language Learners. Some are new to the country and do not know how to read or write yet, while others can read and write.

Writing Fun Sentences

Unit #1

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Duration: 30 Minutes

Class Size: 12 Students

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Write a simple, complete sentence using a subject and a verb.
  2. Identify the components of a complete sentence (subject and verb).
  3. Engage in hands-on learning activities to foster language development.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, and supply a reason for the opinion.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1: Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Materials Needed

  1. Whiteboard and markers
  2. Sentence strips (cut-out pieces of paper)
  3. Markers and crayons
  4. Picture cards (with images of common subjects and actions)
  5. Sentence building kits (cubes with different subjects and verbs)

Lesson Procedure

Introduction Activity (5 Minutes)

  1. Greeting and Warm-Up:
    • Gather students in a circle.
    • Share a short, engaging story that includes a few complete sentences. Use exaggerated expressions and lively tone.
    • Ask students to listen for “who” is doing something (subject) and “what” they are doing (verb).

Mini-Lesson (10 Minutes)

  1. Introduction to Complete Sentences:
    • On the whiteboard, write two simple sentences (e.g., "The dog runs." and "The cat sleeps.").
    • Explain the components of a sentence:
      • Subject: Who or what the sentence is about.
      • Verb: What the subject is doing.
    • Highlight the subject and verb in each sentence using different colors.

Guided Practice (5 Minutes)

  1. Sentence Building Activity:
    • Pair students in small groups of two to three.
    • Distribute the picture cards to each group.
    • Instruct groups to select one subject card and one verb card to form a complete sentence.
    • Allow them to share their formed sentence with the class — focusing on proper pronunciation.

Hands-On Activity (7 Minutes)

  1. Creating Sentence Strips:
    • Provide sentence strips, markers, and crayons.
    • Each student chooses a subject and a verb from the sentence building kits.
    • Students write their chosen subject and verb on the strip, creating their sentence (e.g., “The bird flies.”).
    • Encourage students to illustrate their sentences on the back of the strip.

Closing Activity (3 Minutes)

  1. Sentence Sharing:
    • Have students share their sentence strips with the class.
    • Focus on clarity while reading and encourage applause for each effort.
    • As a final wrap up, ask them to identify components (subject and verb) in their own sentences.

Differentiation Strategies

  • For Beginners: Provide more visuals and one-on-one assistance. Use sentence starters.
  • For Advanced Students: Encourage them to add adjectives (e.g., “The small dog runs quickly.”) and expand their sentences.
  • Visual Supports: Use picture cards and sentence strips to reinforce learning for ELL students.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the sentence-building activity.
  • Evaluate their sentence strips for:
    • Clarity of subject and verb
    • Creativity in illustration
  • Use a simple checklist to record their participation and understanding.

Reflection

  1. Did the students understand the components of a complete sentence?
  2. How effectively did the hands-on activities engage ELL students?
  3. What adjustments can be made for the next lesson on sentence structure?

With this lesson plan, teachers will create a dynamic and inclusive environment, encouraging all students to participate and develop their writing skills!
