Overview
This 50-minute lesson is designed for a 6th-grade science class of 20 students. Lesson Timeline
1. Introduction & Engagement (10 minutes)
Activity: "What’s Going On Here?" Visual Observation
- Display 4-5 images of different animals with obvious anatomical features.
- Ask students to observe quietly for 2 minutes, then discuss with a partner what they notice about the animals’ bodies and how those might help the animal survive.
- Facilitate a brief whole-class discussion: What do you think these body parts do? How might they help the animal in its environment?
- Connect observations to the day's topic: anatomy is closely linked to adaptations which improve survival.

2. Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
Content: Anatomy & Adaptation Overview
- Define anatomy (the structure of an organism) and adaptation (a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment).
- Explain the concept of natural selection briefly, emphasizing how advantageous anatomical adaptations are more likely to be passed on.
- Present 3 example animals illustrating specific anatomical adaptations and connect them explicitly to their environments:
- Camel’s humps and long eyelashes → desert adaptation
- Polar bear’s thick fur and large paws → Arctic adaptation
- Frog’s webbed feet → aquatic adaptation
Visual aids will be key. Keep explanations concise and age-appropriate, linking back to the examples from the introduction.
3. Collaborative Group Activity (15 minutes)
Activity: Adaptation Match-Up
- Divide students into four groups of five.
- Give each group a set of adaptation cards (each card names an adaptation and environment).
- Challenge groups to match each anatomical adaptation to the correct environment and explain why the feature helps survival there.
- Groups record their reasoning in notebooks.
- After matches, groups share their most interesting adaptation and explanation with the class.

4. Written Argument & Evidence (10 minutes)

b) How does it help the animal survive?
