Linking Literacy Due to the nature of this activity, there is not a digitized page for students to submit their answers online.

Common Core Connections

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2- Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4- Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

Materials Printed Materials 1 STEMscopedia (per student) 1 Animal Parts Discussion Slide (per group), can be projected 1 Koala Discussion Slide (per group), can be projected

Pre-Reading Instructions Display the Animal Parts Discussion Slide for the class. Students will discuss the questions with a partner to identify the animal parts in each of the pictures. Then, they will discuss how each of the body parts is used by an animal and how they think humans might have used these types of designs to solve their problems. Discussion should involve explaining the following observations: A beaver’s tail is used to help it swim and to help it slap the water when it is in danger. The shape of the beaver’s tail gave humans the idea for how to make a paddle that would help them move through water. A turtle shell helps protect the turtle. Humans have used the idea of a turtle shell to design helmets to protect our head. An owl’s claws help it catch prey and grip onto things. People could use the claw’s design to make a tool that helps hold onto things. Sight – point to their eyes Hearing – point to their ears Smell – point to their nose Touch – rub the back of their hand with one finger Taste – stick out their tongue Students will use these motions to show which sense is being used in the STEMscopedia as you read. Observe the students during the reading to ensure the students are displaying the correct gestures. Post-Reading Instructions Display the Koala discussion slide for the class. Students will work with a partner to identify whether one of the koalas in the pictures looks like it could be in danger. They will justify their answers, using clues they notice in the pictures. Discussion should involve explaining how animals use their five senses to determine if there is danger nearby, especially how the animals look at and listen for other animals in the area, as seen in this example. If you would like to have the students write their answers and justifications, paper and pencils will be needed.

Overview

This 25-minute lesson engages 1st grade students in exploring animal adaptations and their five senses through interactive discussion, reading, and partner activities. The lesson integrates science with literacy skills according to the Common Core State Standards, emphasizing comprehension, sensory awareness, and critical thinking.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Science: Identify animal body parts and describe their functions in survival and adaptation.
  • Science: Explain how animals use their five senses to detect danger or interact with their environment.
  • Literacy (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2): Retell key details from a text to demonstrate understanding of its central message.
  • Literacy (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4): Identify words and phrases in a text that suggest feelings or sensory experiences.
  • Speaking & Listening: Collaborate in pairs to discuss observations and justify conclusions.

Standards Alignment

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2: Retell stories/key details to show understanding of central message.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.4: Identify words/phrases suggesting feelings or sensory appeal.
  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) 1-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns in animals’ behavior that help them survive.

Materials Needed

  • One STEMscopedia booklet per student
  • Animal Parts Discussion Slide (projected or printed by group)
  • Koala Discussion Slide (projected or printed by group)
  • Paper and pencils (optional, for written reflections)

Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction & Animal Parts Discussion (7 minutes)

  • Display the Animal Parts Discussion Slide to the whole class.
  • Pair students for buddy discussions.
  • Prompt: Have students identify animal parts shown (beaver’s tail, turtle shell, owl’s claws).
  • Guiding Questions:
    • What do these body parts do for the animals?
    • How do these animal parts help the animals survive?
    • Can you think of something humans might have created by looking at these animals?
  • Teacher Explanation:
    • Beaver’s tail: helps swim and slap water for warning – inspired paddles.
    • Turtle shell: protective armor – inspired helmets.
    • Owl’s claws: catching and holding prey – inspired gripping tools.
  • Wrap-up: Invite 2-3 pairs to share ideas with the class.

2. Sensory Connection During Reading (10 minutes)

  • Distribute STEMscopedias to students and gather for read-aloud.
  • Explain the five senses gestures:
    • Sight: Point to eyes
    • Hearing: Point to ears
    • Smell: Point to nose
    • Touch: Rub back of hand
    • Taste: Stick out tongue
  • Read aloud the first paragraph of STEMscopedia.
  • Student Participation: Students perform the gesture matching the sense used in the text when prompted.
  • Monitor students for accuracy and provide gentle correction to ensure understanding.
  • Pause periodically to ask: “What sense is the animal using here?” “How do you know?”

3. Koala Danger Discussion & Critical Thinking (7 minutes)

  • Display the Koala Discussion Slide.
  • In pairs, students observe the pictures and decide which koala looks like it could be in danger.
  • Prompt: What clues did you see that helped you decide?
  • Focus Discussion: How do animals use their senses — especially sight and hearing — to watch for danger?
  • Optional Writing: Students may jot down their answers and reasons on paper.
  • Class Share: Select volunteers to explain their conclusions aloud.

4. Conclusion & Reflection (1 minute)

  • Briefly review key ideas: animal body part functions, the five senses, and how animals stay safe.
  • Encourage students to think about how they use their senses every day.

Assessment

  • Formative: Teacher observation during discussions and read-aloud to verify participation and correct use of sensory gestures.
  • Oral: Partner sharing of observations, demonstrating comprehension of animal adaptations and sensory clues.
  • Optional Written: Short sentence or drawing about how one animal part helps survival or how senses help detect danger.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Provide sentence starters for students needing language support (e.g., “I think the beaver’s tail helps…”)
  • Use visuals and gestures to reinforce comprehension for ESL learners.
  • Pair higher-achieving students with peers to facilitate peer teaching during partner tasks.

Teacher Tips

  • Use expressive voice and gestures during read-aloud to model sensory language.
  • Integrate real-life connections by asking students to name body parts or tools at home inspired by animal designs.
  • Consider using a tactile model or picture cards related to animals' body parts to engage kinesthetic learners.

This lesson plan is designed to fully engage young learners in science literacy, connecting sensory learning to animal adaptations through hands-on discussion and movement while meeting critical Common Core standards.
