Explore 2: Activity - Survivor! Everyday Phenomena What are some ways animals respond to their environments?
Description (CCC) Students match cards to discover ways animals use their body parts to respond to their environments to grow and survive.
Materials Printed Material 1 Survivor! (per student) 2 Survivor Cards (per class)
Reusable 1 Glue bottle or stick (per student)
Consumable 1 Zip-top bag, plastic (per pair)
Preparation
Print the materials ahead of time. Cut apart the Survivor Cards.
Put one set of an animal's event and the corresponding animal's reaction Survivor Cards in a zip-top bag. Add the duplicate set of the animal's event and the animal's reaction cards to each bag.
Plan to distribute one bag to each student pair in your class and explain that the bags contain two Survivor Card sets because each student needs a set for their Student Journals.
STEMcoach in Action
The classroom environment must be a safe place for students, so that they feel comfortable taking risks and engaging in the learning experience. This teacher action includes all those practices that encourage a positive relationship between the teacher and the student, between students, and extends to the wider community. Procedure and Facilitation Points As students work through the activity, look for teachable moments to introduce students to the following vocabulary terms. Try to point out examples of the terms as students are working so that they can connect the meaning of the word with their experiences. Encourage students to use the following words as they work together to plan their skit.
Solution: an answer to a problem Survival: avoiding death Growth: an increase in size Behavior: what a plant or animal does Divide students into pairs. Pass out one bag of Survivor Cards to each pair. Each student pair should read the animal behavior and how the animal uses its senses to survive. Give each student pair about 5–10 minutes to plan a short skit. They should act out the animal behavior and how that animal uses its senses. Students will glue down their cards and use them to complete their Student Journals. Allow pairs to share their skits. The rest of the class will try to guess what the animal behavior is and how the animal uses its senses to survive. After each pair is finished, allow them to share what was written on their cards. Discuss the following and add new information to the Graphic Organizer: (CCC) In what ways do animals use information from their body parts to survive? Animals use their senses to detect danger and to find food. Record this example of structure and function on the class crosscutting concept chart. Discuss other examples of structure and function that the students have previously explored. Charts can be found in the teacher toolbox. Which animals rely most on sight? Owls, eagles, etc. Which animals rely most on hearing? Rabbits, deer, etc. Which animals rely most on taste? Catfish, cows, etc. Which animals rely most on touch? Moles, earthworms, etc. Which animals rely most on smell? Piranhas, sharks, bears, dogs, etc. Could an animal survive without its senses? No, because the animal would not be able to find food to grow or sense danger to survive predators. Connection to the Investigative Phenomena Once students have completed the activity, have them refer to the Investigative Phenomena question, anchor their learning, and revise their thinking.
