Artful Creation Collage

Overview

In this 60-minute faith-based visual arts lesson, students observe creation, explore natural shapes and textures, and make a collage expressing gratitude. The calm, small-group setting supports careful observation, respectful collaboration, and oral or written reflection.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

• Use natural shapes, colors, and textures to communicate gratitude for creation.
• Plan a collage with a foreground, background, pattern, and balanced composition.
• Use classroom materials and collected natural items safely and respectfully.
• Explain one design choice and one reason they feel grateful for creation.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 minutes – Observe and wonder

Open with the observation and hook slides and display the Bible verse card. Invite students to silently observe one leaf or safe natural item. Ask: “What color do you notice?” and “What texture do you feel or see?” Each student shares one color and one texture. Remind students that creation can inspire thankful artwork.

2. 5–15 minutes – Model collage techniques

Use the collage demonstration slides to model respectful collection: take only items already on the ground, avoid unknown plants, and wash hands afterward. Demonstrate placing a background piece first, adding a foreground shape, creating a simple repeating pattern, and leaving some space so the composition feels balanced. Model safe scissor use, small dots of glue, and pressing pieces gently. Think aloud: “I chose this olive shape for the center because it makes my eye look here.”

3. 15–30 minutes – Sort and plan

Distribute the collage planning sheet. Students work in pairs or as a group of three to sort materials by color, texture, and shape. They may handle materials gently and describe them using words such as smooth, rough, curved, pointed, light, and dark. Students draw a small thumbnail plan showing a background, foreground, at least five shapes or textures, and a possible pattern. Circulate and ask, “Where will the viewer look first?” and “How will you make both sides feel balanced?”

4. 30–50 minutes – Create and caption

Revisit the creation steps and caption slides and students create a “Thank You for Creation” collage on cardstock. They may tear or cut recycled paper, arrange natural items, add earth-tone or olive crayon/paint marks, and glue only after trying several arrangements. Students then add a caption using the caption planning area. Offer the sentence stem “I am grateful for ___ because ___.” Students may dictate their sentence, copy a teacher-written version, write independently, or record it orally for the teacher.

5. 50–55 minutes – Gallery walk

Display the gallery walk prompt slide. Place collages where students can view them without touching. Students move quietly and give one “I notice…” and one “I appreciate…” comment to a partner or the group. Model specific feedback, such as, “I notice rough and smooth textures together,” rather than judging whether artwork is pretty.

6. 55–60 minutes – Reflect and share

Students return to their seats and use the reflection slide to share one design choice and one gratitude. Invite each student to point to the five or more shapes or textures in their collage. Collect the planning sheets with the finished artwork and briefly celebrate careful observation, safe choices, and thankful thinking.

Assessment

• Observe sorting, planning, safe tool use, material choices, and participation in discussion.
• Check each collage for at least five textures or shapes, a reasonably balanced composition, and evidence of foreground/background or pattern.
• Listen for an explanation of one design choice and one gratitude; review the caption or oral response.

Differentiation

• Provide pre-cut paper pieces, adaptive scissors, larger natural items, tactile choices, glue sponges, and a clearly modeled sample for students needing motor or sensory support.
• Offer verbal directions one step at a time, visual sequence cards in the creation steps, and a quiet workspace. Read all worksheet text aloud in a dyslexia-friendly sans-serif font with generous spacing.
• Allow students to dictate, copy, draw, or orally record the caption. Rehearse the sentence stem with a partner before writing.
• For Grade 3 or students ready for extension, require a repeating pattern and a short paragraph explaining how the collage communicates gratitude.
