Teaching Instructions

I want lesson plans that focus on phonemic awareness skills. Starting with compound words, then syllables in multi-syllable words, then blends plus a letter sound (example: ca-t, do-g), then two sound words (example: bow, toe, tea, tie, ice, etc), then three sound words such as mat, rug, dot, nap, etc. For each lesson I want a list of target words on the left side of the page. In the middle of the page, I want 9 pictures that correspond to the word column on the left. At the top of the page, there should be instructions for the teacher or parent to say each compound word like a robot, saying only syllables or individual sounds depending on the level of difficulty.

Building Phonemic Skills

Curriculum Area: English Language Arts (ELA)

Level: Kindergarten - Foundational Skills aligned with US standards (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2)

Objectives:

  1. Develop phonemic awareness by identifying, segmenting, and blending sounds in spoken words.
  2. Recognize and manipulate compound words, syllables, and sounds in various word structures.
  3. Build a strong foundation for early decoding and word recognition skills in alignment with Common Core Standards.

Materials Needed:

  • Picture cards matching the target words (provided).
  • Hands-on materials for active engagement (blocks, snap cubes, or counters).
  • Worksheet pages for practice (teacher-made or drawn).
  • Sound segmenting wands (optional, such as a pointer or any straight object).

Timeframe: 120 minutes

Lesson Breakdown

Part 1: Compound Words (20 minutes)

Instructions for Teacher/Parent

Say each compound word like a robot, pausing between the two smaller words. For example, "Sun...shine." Ask the student to blend the words back together: "Sunshine." Use the pictures for reference.

Target Words and Picture Grid:

Word ListPicture Grid
Sunshine🌞+☀️
Football🏈👟
Pancake🥞
Rainbow🌈
Butterfly🦋
Ladybug🕊️ +🐞
Snowflake❄️
Toothbrush🦷 + 🪥
Moonlight🌙✨

Hands-On Activities:

  • Use snap cubes: Combine cubes for “sun” and “shine” and snap them together.
  • Pair picture cards (e.g., match 🦋 and 🕊️🐞 to create "butterfly").

Part 2: Syllables in Multi-Syllable Words (20 minutes)

Instructions for Teacher/Parent

Say each multi-syllable word, clapping or tapping for each syllable. Ask the student to repeat the syllables back to you. Then blend the syllables together to say the word.

Target Words and Picture Grid:

Tiger🐅
Apple🍎
Bunny🐰
Garden🏡+🌼
Cookie🍪
Rocket🚀
Baby👶
Flower🌷
Pencil✏️

Hands-On Activity:

  • Use counters for counting syllables. The student moves a counter for each syllable (e.g., “Ti-ger” = 2 counters).
  • Encourage a hop for every syllable for a kinesthetic experience.

Part 3: Blends + A Letter Sound (25 minutes)

Instructions for Teacher/Parent

Say the word using distinct sounds for the blend and the additional letter. For example, segment "Cat" as "C...at" and "Dog" as "D...og." Ask the student to blend the sounds into a full word.

Target Words and Picture Grid:

Cat🐱
Dog🐶
Bat🦇
Pig🐷
Cup🥤
Fan🌀
Bed🛏️
Pan🍳
Hat🎩

Hands-On Activity:

  • Lay down alphabet letter cards ("C" and "AT"), then blend them physically by sliding together.
  • Substitute starting sounds for practice (e.g., bat ➡️ cat ➡️ rat).

Part 4: Two-Sound Words (20 minutes)

Instructions for Teacher/Parent

Separate the word into its two individual sounds. For example, segment "Bow" as "B...ow." Have the student identify the sounds and then blend them together to form the word.

Target Words and Picture Grid:

Word ListPicture Grid
Bow🎀
Toe🦶
Tea🍵
Tie👔
Ice❄️
Bee🐝
Key🔑
Pie🥧
Eye👁

Hands-On Activities:

  • Use wands for segmenting sounds (point to “B” and “ow”).
  • Play "I Spy" using two-sound word clues (“I spy something you wear on your feet. It rhymes with 'Joe.'”).

Part 5: Three-Sound Words (35 minutes)

Instructions for Teacher/Parent

Say the word sound by sound, like a robot. For example, "M...a...t." Ask the student to blend the sounds into the word. Use the picture grid to reinforce meaning.

Target Words and Picture Grid:

Word ListPicture Grid
Mat🧘
Rug🧺
Dot
Nap🛌
Jet✈️
Map🗺️
Lip👄
Pen🖊️
Rod🎣

Hands-On Activities:

  • Build sounds using objects: Use letter blocks or cards to spell out "M," "A," "T," and slide them together.
  • Practice real-world connections: Ask questions, such as “Find something in the room that rhymes with ‘mat.’”

Closing Activity (5 minutes):

Play a "Sound Blending Race!"

  • Show one picture card from any section.
  • Say the word robot-style, segmented into sounds.
  • The student “races” to say the full blended word aloud as quickly as possible.

Assessment:

  • Observe the student's ability to blend and segment sounds for accuracy.
  • Provide positive reinforcement for all responses, emphasizing effort.
  • Adapt future lessons if needed to reinforce areas of difficulty.

Teacher’s Note: This plan uses multisensory techniques (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) to engage young learners. Phonemic awareness is a foundational skill for reading; this scaffolded approach ensures students build confidence with phonemes progressively.
