Teaching Instructions

I want lesson plans that focus on phonemic awareness skills. Starting with compound words, then syllables in multi-syllable words, then blends plus a letter sound (example: ca-t, do-g), then two sound words (example: bow, toe, tea, tie, ice, etc), then three sound words such as mat, rug, dot, nap, etc. For each lesson I want a list of target words on the left side of the page. In the middle of the page, I want 9 pictures that correspond to the word column on the left. At the top of the page, there should be instructions for the teacher or parent to say each compound word like a robot, saying only syllables or individual sounds depending on the level of difficulty.

Building Sounds Together

Curriculum Area

Phonemic Awareness (Kindergarten Level) – Aligns with Common Core State Standards (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2): Demonstrating understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this 5-minute session, the student will:

  1. Identify and segment compound words.
  2. Count and clap syllables in multi-syllable words.
  3. Blend sounds to form words (two and three sounds).
  4. Build confidence in phonemic awareness through practice and collaboration.

Materials

  • Printable or visual cards with the provided pictures and words
  • Teacher/Parent script for guided practice

Teacher Instructions

Instructions for all segments emphasize playful, interactive engagement and encouraging the child with claps, smiles, and cheers for effort. Use a robotic voice to model the initial sound segmenting before encouraging them to imitate you.

Detailed Steps

1. Compound Words (1 Minute)

  • Teacher Script: “Listen to my robot voice! I’m going to say a big word in pieces. Sun… Flower. Can you put these together? What word do we get? Sunflower!
  • Activity: After a few examples, show the pictures and have the student repeat the full word.

2. Clapping Syllables (1 Minute)

  • Teacher Script: “Next, we’ll clap the parts of longer words! Let’s try ‘ba-na-na.’ That’s three claps! Clap with me!
  • Activity: Point to each picture, say the word, and clap it out. Encourage the student to echo your actions.

3. Blends + Letter Sounds (1 Minute)

  • Teacher Script: “Now we’ll blend sounds! Say it like I do: c-a-t. Say it with me... cat! Great job!”
  • Activity: Show the picture as you break down the sounds of each word. Provide positive reinforcement with each correct response.

4. Two-Sound Words (1 Minute)

  • Teacher Script: “Let’s listen for words with just two sounds. B-ow. Say the parts with me. Now, what word is it? Bow!
  • Activity: Let them practice with your guidance as they see the visual aid for each word.

5. Three-Sound Words (1 Minute)

  • Teacher Script: “Great work! Let’s finish with words that have three sounds. Listen: m-a-t. Say it back to me... mat! Wonderful!”
  • Activity: Help the student gain mastery by reviewing words they found tricky or celebrating if they got them right away.

Closing Activity

Celebration: End the session with a round of applause and verbal praise, such as “You’re a word-building superstar!”

Bonus Challenge (Optional): “Can you find anything around you that rhymes with mat? What about nap?”

Notes for Teachers/Parents

  • Adjust pacing based on the child’s comfort level; if they seem engaged, feel free to spend a few more seconds expanding their favorite section.
  • Always model enthusiasm and positivity to help instill a love for language.

Teacher Tip

To extend this lesson, create a "phoneme treasure hunt" where students find objects around them that match similar sounds or syllable lengths. It’s a fun way to reinforce skills!
