Lesson Objectives

  1. Students will be able to identify the main characters in a text.
  2. Students will be able to describe the main characters' physical appearance, personality traits, and actions.
  3. Students will be able to analyze the impact of characters on the story.

Materials Needed

  • Copies of a short story (suggested: "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant) for each student
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Character Analysis worksheet for each student
  • Sticky notes
  • Timer

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Warm-Up Activity: Write the word "Character" on the whiteboard. Ask students what comes to mind when they hear this word. Write their responses on the board.
  2. Objective Sharing: Briefly outline the lesson objectives. Explain that today they will become "Character Detectives" to deeply understand characters in a story.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Reading the Text: Hand out copies of "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. Ask students to read the story silently to themselves. Set a timer for 7 minutes.
  2. Identifying Main Characters: Once the time is up, gather the class and ask, "Who are the main characters in the story?" List the characters on the whiteboard.
  3. Character Chart: Draw a simple character chart on the whiteboard with three columns: "Character Name," "Physical Appearance," and "Personality Traits." Fill in the chart together as a class, starting with the physical appearance.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Character Analysis Worksheet: Distribute the Character Analysis worksheet. Students will individually fill out the worksheet, describing each main character's physical appearance, personality traits, and actions.
  2. Peer Discussion: Pair students up to discuss their findings. Each student should share one new piece of information that their partner missed.

Group Activity (10 minutes)

  1. Impact on Story: Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students. Each group will receive a sheet of chart paper and markers.
  2. Mapping Impact: Ask each group to create a mind map showing how the main characters impact the story. For example, how their decisions and actions influence the plot.
  3. Group Presentation: Each group will present their mind map to the class, explaining how they believe each character affects the story's outcome.

Closure (4 minutes)

  1. Review Objectives: Quickly review the lesson objectives to ensure they were met.
  2. Exit Ticket: Each student writes down one adjective describing the personality of a main character on a sticky note and places it on the board as they exit the classroom.
