Objectives

Materials Needed
- Picture cards with Christmas-related vocabulary (tree, gift, star, Santa, reindeer, ornament, snowflake, etc.)
- Large storybook: “Maisy’s Christmas Tree” by Lucy Cousins (or an age-appropriate Christmas book of your choice)
- A small stuffed animal “Santa Helper” to use as a talking stick
- Markers, crayons, and Christmas-themed coloring sheets
- A paper Christmas tree for a group activity (can be pre-made or drawn on a large piece of paper)
- Velcro ornaments or paper cut-outs of ornaments for decorating
- Soft Christmas background music for transitions
Lesson Structure
1. Large Group Activity: Christmas Word Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Warm-Up Activity (3 minutes):
- Sing a simple Christmas song like “Jingle Bells” to set the tone.
- Show a picture of a Christmas tree and ask, “What do you see on this tree?” Encourage answers like “star,” “ornament,” “lights,” or “snow.”

Introduce Vocabulary (7 minutes):
- Show large picture cards (one at a time) featuring key vocabulary (tree, gift, star, Santa, reindeer, ornament, etc.).
- Say the word clearly and have the children repeat it.
- Act it out or add a fun motion (e.g., pretend to decorate a tree when you say “ornament” or pretend to give a gift box with “gift”).
- Ask questions like: “What color is this ornament?” or “Where do we put a star?”
2. Story Time: Christmas Adventures (8 minutes)
Curriculum Focus: Literacy Development
- Gather the children in a circle and introduce the book, “Maisy’s Christmas Tree” or another age-appropriate story.
- Show the cover and ask, “What do you see? What do you think this story is about?”
- During the reading, pause on key pages and ask guiding questions:
- “What is Maisy putting on the Christmas tree?”
- “Who do you think is going to visit on Christmas Day?”
- Incorporate movement where possible (e.g., have kids pretend to hang ornaments or deliver presents like the characters in the book).
- After the story, recap: “What did Maisy do to get ready for Christmas?”
3. Small Group Activity: Decorate Our Class Tree (10 minutes)

- Divide the large group into three smaller groups of five students each.
- Provide each group with paper ornaments and markers/crayons. Ask them to decorate the ornaments with drawings or stickers.
- Once ornaments are complete, reassemble the class into one group near the large paper tree. Have children take turns attaching their ornaments to the tree with Velcro or tape.
- Ask each child to share: “I made this ornament, and it has a (star/snowflake/etc.).”
4. Closing Discussion: Christmas Favorites (2 minutes)

- Circle time: Pass around the “Santa Helper” stuffed animal to give each child a turn to speak.
- Ask, “What is your favorite thing about Christmas?” Encourage answers like “decorating the tree,” “snow,” or “presents.”
- Praise responses and thank everyone for sharing.
