Kindergarten (NaNth Grade)
Duration
45 minutes
Class Size
20 students
Unit
Wheels and Wings Adventure (Lesson 2 of 12)
Lesson Description
Students will explore the colors and shapes of various vehicles such as cars, trucks, airplanes, and helicopters. Through a hands-on craft activity, children will create their own vehicle by assembling colored shapes. This lesson develops early math readiness (shape and color identification), fine motor skills, and creativity.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and name common shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle) and colors (red, blue, yellow, green) found in vehicles.
- Sort vehicles by color and shape attributes.
- Create a simple vehicle model using paper shapes, demonstrating understanding of shape and color concepts.
- Enhance fine motor skills by cutting and pasting shapes.
Common Core State Standards Alignment
Mathematics - Kindergarten (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2)
- Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Mathematics - Kindergarten (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.3)
- Identify shapes as two-dimensional (flat) and three-dimensional (solid).
Mathematics - Kindergarten (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3)
- Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.
Language Arts - Kindergarten (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1)
- Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults.
Materials Needed
- Pre-cut construction paper shapes: circles, squares, rectangles, triangles in different colors (red, blue, yellow, green)
- Glue sticks
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (child-safe)
- Large white cardstock paper (one per student)
- Printed picture cards of various vehicles (cars, trucks, planes, helicopters) in different colors and shapes
- Whiteboard and markers
Lesson Procedure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet the class and introduce the unit theme, "Wheels and Wings Adventure."
- Show picture cards of vehicles. Ask students to name the colors and shapes they see on the vehicles.
- Write those shapes and colors on the whiteboard. Clarify any questions.
- Emphasize that today they will create their own vehicle using these shapes and colors.
2. Shape and Color Exploration Activity (10 minutes)
- Distribute vehicle picture cards to small groups of 4–5 students.
- Groups discuss among themselves identifying which shapes form parts of the vehicles (wheels = circles, windows = rectangles, etc.) and the colors of those shapes.
- Circulate to assist and prompt students to say the shape and color names aloud, promoting verbal skills (aligned with CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1).
3. Hands-on Creation: Build Your Vehicle (20 minutes)
- Give each child a cardstock paper, glue, and a collection of pre-cut shapes.
- Prompt them to assemble and glue shapes on the paper to create a vehicle of their choice. Encourage use of multiple shapes and colors.
- Students may add details with crayons, such as windows, doors, or wings.
- Teachers assist with cutting as needed for smaller shapes, supporting fine motor development.
4. Sharing and Reflection (7 minutes)
- Invite students to share their vehicle creations with the class.
- Ask questions like:
- "What shapes did you use?"
- "What colors can you see in your vehicle?"
- Reinforce shape and color vocabulary.
- Celebrate efforts to foster confidence.
5. Clean-Up and Transition (3 minutes)
Assessment
- Observation checklist during group discussions to confirm ability to identify and name shapes and colors accurately.
- Review each student’s vehicle craft for correct shape and color usage.
- Use verbal questioning to assess comprehension and vocabulary retention.
- Collect final craft as evidence of meeting the standard.
Differentiation
- For students needing extra support: Provide shape stencils or pre-glued shape outlines to place colored shapes on.
- For advanced students: Challenge them to count and name the number of each shape on their vehicle or attempt to create a specific vehicle type like an airplane or fire truck.
Teacher Reflection Prompt
- Did students actively engage and use shape/color vocabulary correctly?
- Were the materials age-appropriate and did they support fine motor skills effectively?
- How might I incorporate technology or interactive media to complement this lesson in the future?
