Materials Needed
- Printed recipe cards (prepared in advance) with vocabulary highlighting key ingredients and cooking verbs in Spanish and English
- Ingredients (optional for demonstration) or images/video of cooking process
- Whiteboard and markers
- Student notebooks/journals
- Vocabulary word bank poster or handout from the unit
- Exit ticket paper slips or digital submission method
Lesson Procedure
1. Do Now (5 minutes)
- Prompt: “Share your favorite dish and its ingredients.”
- Students write this brief response in their notebooks or share orally in pairs.
- Teacher circulates, observes language use, and encourages use of vocabulary from the unit (e.g., ingredientes, preparar, cocinar, sabor, dulce, salado).
2. Warm-up Review (7 minutes)
- Use a quick, interactive quiz/game (e.g., Kahoot, Quiz-Quiz-Trade) with vocabulary and cooking concepts from the entire unit.
- Focus on verbs (cortar, mezclar, hervir), food items, and adjectives describing flavor and texture.
- Reinforce pronunciation and meanings with student participation.
3. Cooking Demonstration/Recipe Reading (15 minutes)
- Method Option 1: Teacher-led live cooking demonstration of a simple recipe using ingredients and vocabulary from the unit (e.g., guacamole, fruit salad).
- Method Option 2: Teacher-led reading of a recipe card, emphasizing vocabulary words and step-by-step instructions.
- Visual aids (actual ingredients or images) used to engage multiple learning styles.
- Pause frequently to elicit student comprehension: Ask “¿Qué paso sigue?” "¿Qué ingrediente usamos aquí?"
- Use think-pair-share to discuss steps and vocabulary during demonstration.
4. Guided Recipe Writing Practice (10 minutes)
- Students write their own simple recipe for a dish (real or imagined), incorporating at least five vocabulary words learned in the unit.
- Provide sentence starters such as:
- “Primero, corto…”
- “Después, mezclo…”
- “Finalmente, cocino…”
- Teacher circulates to provide feedback and guidance on vocabulary and grammar.
5. Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
- Students submit a short recipe (3-5 sentences) using at least five target vocabulary words on a small slip of paper or via a digital tool if available.
- Example: "Para hacer una ensalada, primero corto la lechuga y luego mezclo las verduras. Agrego sal y limón para sabor."
- Collect exit tickets for quick assessment of vocabulary mastery and recipe writing skill.
Differentiation and Extensions
- For Advanced Students: Challenge them to include cultural notes or explain cooking techniques in Spanish.
- For English Language Learners (ELLs): Provide bilingual vocabulary handouts and extra scaffolding during writing.
- Use visuals and gestures generously to support comprehension.
- Pair students strategically so stronger speakers support peers.
Assessment
- Formative assessments through observation during Do Now, warm-up game, and cooking demo participation.
- Review exit tickets for mastery of vocabulary and ability to write coherent procedural text in Spanish.
- Informally assess speaking fluency and vocabulary recall during discussions.
Reflection for Teacher
- Note which vocabulary words students use most/least accurately.
- Assess if demonstration helped clarify cooking verbs and sequence words.
- Consider student engagement and group dynamics during discussions.
- Use feedback for future culinary-themed or cultural lessons.
This engaging and interactive lesson not only reviews essential vocabulary in a meaningful context but also integrates practical language skills aligned with Common Core standards, preparing students to read, write, and speak in authentic scenarios. It concludes the unit ¡Sabores del Mundo! with cultural appreciation and real-world application.
