Duration: 45 minutes
Class size: 7 students
Unit: Phonics Fun: CVC Adventures
Lesson: 8 of 8
Title: Assessment and Review of CVC Words
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Decode and read aloud at least 10 out of 12 CVC words accurately using phonics skills learned in the unit.
- Demonstrate understanding of short vowel sounds and consonant sounds as applied in CVC words.
- Participate actively in phonics review activities, identifying patterns and sounds confidently.
Common Core State Standards Alignment
RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- RF.1.3a: Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
- RF.1.3b: Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
- RF.1.3c: Decode words with common vowel teams.
RF.1.4: Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
- RF.1.4a: Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
Materials Needed
- Word cards with 12 targeted CVC words from the unit (e.g., cat, bed, pin, dog, sun, hop)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Individual dry-erase boards and markers for students
- Stickers or small reward tokens
- Chart paper with phonics rules summary
- Timer or clock for pacing
Lesson Timeline & Activities
1. Warm-Up Review (8 minutes)
Objective: Refresh phonics rules and reinforce recall
- Gather students in a circle.
- Display chart paper summarizing key phonics rules from the unit (short vowels a, e, i, o, u; consonants; digraphs if covered).
- Use a quick “Phonics Sound Call-and-Response”: Teacher says a sound; students echo back and say a CVC word with that sound.
- Prompt students to identify vowels and consonants in simple words aloud.
Teacher tip: Use encouraging tone and keep pace lively to maintain engagement.
2. Guided Group Practice (10 minutes)
Objective: Apply phonics rules to decode CVC words together
- Show each word card one by one.
- Model sounding out the word slowly, stretching each sound.
- Have students repeat the sounds and then blend them to say the word.
- Call on individual students to decode and read words aloud.
- Praise successful decoding and gently correct & reteach any difficulties on the spot.
- Use whiteboard to write any tricky words and break them into parts.
3. Individual Assessment (15 minutes)
Objective: Assess decoding of 10 out of 12 CVC words independently
- Provide each student with a personal dry-erase board and marker.
- Show word cards one at a time, without modeling.
- Ask each student individually to:
- Read the word aloud.
- Write the word on their board (to reinforce letter-sound correspondence and spelling).
- Record successes and note any errors for review.
- If a student struggles, use prompting questions: “What is the first sound? What vowel do you hear in the middle?”
- Ensure assessment is low-pressure and supportive.
4. Celebration and Discussion (7 minutes)
Objective: Celebrate progress, address challenges, and motivate
- Gather students back together.
- Celebrate decoding 10+ words by handing out stickers or tokens for effort and achievement.
- Ask open questions: “Which words were your favorites? Which words were tricky?”
- Briefly revisit any problem words as a group, using sounds and blending strategies.
- Encourage students to keep practicing using phonics fun stories or games at home.
5. Closing Activity - Phonics Chant (5 minutes)
Objective: End on an energizing, reinforcing note
- Teach or replay a simple phonics chant/song covering short vowels and CVC blends learned.
- Encourage students to clap and chant together, strengthening memory via rhythm and repetition.
- Example chant line: “Short vowels, hear them ring, a, e, i, o, u we sing!”
Assessment & Feedback
- Use individual student decoding performance on the 10-word assessment to evaluate mastery of phonics rules and CVC word reading.
- Provide feedback highlighting strengths and suggest specific sounds or blends needing practice.
- Document outcomes to inform instruction for future small group or individual support.
Differentiation
- For students needing extra support: Provide picture cues alongside word cards.
- For advanced learners: Challenge them to create their own CVC words from sound cards or write simple sentences using the words.
Reflection for Teachers
- Observe student confidence and fluency during assessment; consider follow-up interventions as needed.
- Reflect on engagement strategies—did the chant and reward system boost enthusiasm?
- Plan a brief extension for students who excelled, such as exploring blends or beginning sight words.
This final lesson ties together the entire unit by validating students’ decoding skills in a supportive, interactive way while adhering closely to CCSS foundational phonics standards. It blends assessment seamlessly with fun activities to "wow" young learners and empower teachers to celebrate growth.
