Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Engage: Mystery location

Display a mystery coordinate, such as approximately 38° N, 77° W, and ask students to predict the location. Open with the mystery-location challenge slide and invite students to explain how they made their prediction. Emphasize that coordinates give a precise, or absolute, location.

  1. 5–15 minutes – Mini-lesson and modeling

Use the latitude, longitude, and relative-location teaching slides with a classroom map or projected U.S. map. Model that latitude lines run east–west but measure distance north or south of the Equator, while longitude lines run north–south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.

Define absolute location as a precise position, commonly shown with latitude and longitude. Define relative location as describing where a place is in relation to another place.   1. 38–48 minutes – Create and trade coordinate clues

Students use the coordinate-clue instructions and discussion prompts to create one mystery-location clue for a classmate. Each clue should include approximate coordinates and one relative-location hint, such as a nearby state, region, or major city.

Students trade clues with a nearby pair and solve them using their maps. Partners check one another’s answers and explain which words provided absolute information and which provided relative information.

  1. 48–50 minutes – Exit ticket

Finish with the retrieval practice exit ticket slips. Students identify a location from a short description or coordinate pair and explain whether the description is absolute, relative, or includes both. Collect slips as students leave.
