Dictionary Detective Work

Overview

Students use print and digital dictionaries and glossaries to look up unfamiliar words, building the habit of independently clarifying word meanings. This lesson connects to the IB PYP transdisciplinary theme of "How We Express Ourselves" by exploring how language carries and communicates meaning.

Lesson Structure (20 minutes)

0–3 min | Hook and Activation Display the word "burrow" on the board and ask students, "If you didn't know this word at all, what would you do?" Take two or three quick responses. Tell students that today they become Dictionary Detectives, using dictionaries and glossaries as their investigation tools.

3–7 min | Mini-Lesson: How a Dictionary Works Hold up a print dictionary and briefly show students three things: alphabetical order, guide words at the top of each page, and the parts of a definition (word, pronunciation, meaning, example sentence). Keep it brisk — one minute per feature. Then open a projected digital dictionary (or show a screenshot if devices aren't available) and point out that the search bar replaces flipping pages but the same information appears.

7–12 min | Guided Practice: Word Hunt Distribute the "Dictionary Detective" worksheet (prepared in advance — see Resources). Each student receives three mystery words pulled from a short classroom read-aloud passage. Working with a partner, students look up each word using either the print dictionary at their desk or a shared classroom tablet. They write the guide words they used, the definition, and one sentence restating the meaning in their own words. Circulate, prompt with questions like "What guide words are at the top of your page?" and keep pairs on track.

12–16 min | Glossary Connection Hand out a one-page leveled nonfiction excerpt that has a glossary at the back. Students find one bolded word in the text, flip to the glossary, and compare: does the glossary definition match what a dictionary says? Partners discuss for one minute, then one or two pairs share out. Reinforce the IB inquiry habit: asking "How do these tools help me understand what I'm reading?"

16–20 min | Reflection and Exit Ask students to hold up their worksheet and point to the word they found most interesting. Collect worksheets as an informal assessment. Close with a short share-out: "Which tool — print dictionary, digital dictionary, or glossary — was easiest to use today, and why?" Validate multiple answers, emphasizing that all three tools serve the same purpose: unlocking meaning.

• Class set of tablets or one projected digital dictionary on the board
• "Dictionary Detective" worksheet (teacher-prepared: three mystery words, guide word column, definition column, restate-in-your-own-words column)

Assessment

• Collect the "Dictionary Detective" worksheet to check whether students located words correctly, recorded guide words, and restated definitions accurately.
• During guided practice, use brief observation and questioning to assess whether students can navigate guide words without significant support.
• Exit conversation (whole-class share) provides a quick read on student confidence and preference between print, digital, and glossary tools.

Differentiation

• Support: Pre-mark dictionary pages with sticky tabs at the correct letter sections for students who struggle with alphabetical order; reduce mystery words from three to two; pair with a stronger peer navigator.
• Extension: Students write their own mini-glossary entry for one mystery word — including a definition, a sample sentence, and a simple illustration — mimicking the format of a real glossary.
• EAL/SEN: Provide a bilingual beginning dictionary or a digital tool with audio pronunciation; allow students to draw a quick sketch alongside their written definition to demonstrate understanding; choose mystery words that appear frequently in classroom content so context clues are nearby.
• Advanced inquiry (IB stretch): Prompt students to notice when a word has multiple definitions and decide which meaning fits the passage — connecting the IB thinking skill of analysis to vocabulary work.
