Overview
This 80-minute asynchronous lesson invites 4th-6th grade students to explore the Elements of Art as they create personalized digital travel posters for a destination they wish to visit. Using a free online design platform, students will combine creativity with critical thinking and practice clear communication skills, aligning with Common Core State Standards in both English Language Arts and Art.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and apply the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, texture, space, form, and value) in a visual project.
- Use a digital design tool to create and arrange visual elements effectively.
- Write concise, engaging text to describe their chosen place, practicing clear communication.
- Analyze and reflect on their artistic choices and how those choices create meaning.
Relevant Common Core State Standards

VA:Cr3.1.4a – Refining and Completing Artistic Work
- Reflect on how the elements of art communicate meaning and adjust as needed.
Materials Needed
- Access to a free, web-based graphic design platform (e.g., a free online canvas or poster maker with drag-and-drop tools)
- Digital device with internet access (computer or tablet)
- Headphones or speakers for tutorial videos (if desired)
- Notebook or digital document for planning and writing
Lesson Activities
1. Introduction: Elements of Art Review (10 minutes)
- Provide students with brief, engaging multimedia (such as an animated video or slides) summarizing the seven Elements of Art: line, shape, color, texture, space, form, and value.
- Ask students to jot down one example of each element they notice daily (e.g., lines in a window frame, shapes in a stop sign).
2. Exploration & Planning (15 minutes)
- Students choose a travel destination they would like to visit (e.g., mountains, city, beach, foreign country).
- In a digital or handwritten planner, students brainstorm:
- What colors represent this place?
- What shapes or lines might be linked to the location’s environment or culture?
- What textures or forms will help express the vibe?
- Begin drafting a short descriptive paragraph about the destination that will appear on their poster (align with CCSS writing standards).
3. Tutorial: Using the Design Platform (10 minutes)
- Provide explicit, step-by-step instructions on how to:
- Open a blank canvas or poster template.
- Use shape tools, color palettes, and text boxes.
- Import free graphics or icons if available.
- Layer and arrange objects on the poster.
- Encourage students to experiment with different elements of art during this digital exploration.
4. Creation: Design the Travel Poster (35 minutes)
- Students use the online platform to:
- Create a travel poster featuring their selected destination.
- Demonstrate at least 5 elements of art.
- Include their written descriptive paragraph clearly within the poster.
- Prompt them to think about emphasis, balance, and unity within their design.
- Encourage originality—no templates or clip art only!
5. Reflection and Self-Assessment (10 minutes)
- Students review their work and write or record a short reflection addressing:
- Which elements of art did they use and why?
- How do these choices help communicate their feelings about the destination?
- What was challenging or fun about using digital design tools?
- They also rate their posters on a simple rubric related to creativity, use of elements, and clarity of writing (teacher can provide).
Assessment
- Formative Assessment: Review brainstorming notes and written paragraphs for understanding of descriptive writing and use of art-related vocabulary (aligned with CCSS W.4-6.2).
- Summative Assessment: Evaluate travel posters using a rubric focusing on effective use of the Elements of Art, creativity, and clarity of written description.
- Reflection Responses: Assess depth of critical thinking about artistic choices.
Adaptations and Extensions
- For students needing support: Provide templates with suggested color palettes or shapes to spark ideas.
- For advanced learners: Challenge them to incorporate value and form in creative ways or write a mini travel brochure to accompany their poster.
- Offer a peer review option via class forum or video call.
Teacher Notes
- Encourage students to explore cultural diversity through artwork by selecting international destinations and researching symbolic colors or patterns relevant to those places (integrating social studies).
- This project supports digital literacy and creativity while meeting Common Core expectations in writing and multimedia presentation.
By combining art, writing, and technology, this lesson plan offers an enriching, accessible, and standards-aligned asynchronous learning experience for upper elementary students.
