Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction and Set-Up (10 minutes)

Begin with a brief discussion: Ask students if they have ever experienced or witnessed an emergency and what they did. Emphasize why knowing emergency procedures is critical for personal and community safety.
Introduce the lesson focus: "Understanding Emergency Procedures" and its relevance in daily life.
Share the day’s learning objectives.

2. Understanding Emergency Situations (10 minutes)

Present different emergency types on the projector — examples: fire, medical emergencies, severe weather, lockdown due to intruder.
Ask students to identify the common elements that need addressing in any emergency (e.g., alerting authorities, protecting self and others, evacuating safely).
Reference NGSSS safety concepts: discuss how following protocols reduces risk.

3. How to Contact Help (10 minutes)

Explain appropriate procedures for contacting emergency services in the U.S.: calling 911, what information to provide (location, type of emergency, severity).
Role-play activity: Divide students into pairs; one pretends to be the caller explaining an emergency, the other the dispatcher asking for information. Switch roles after 5 minutes.
Debrief as a class focusing on clear communication and necessary details.

4. Safe Evacuation Routes (15 minutes)

Hand out printed floor maps of the school with main evacuation routes marked.
Discuss why multiple routes and knowing more than one exit is important.
Small group activity: Students work in groups of 5 to identify alternative evacuation routes considering possible blocked paths. Groups write their evacuation plan on index cards.
Groups share their solutions briefly, highlighting creative thinking or critical considerations.

5. Group Discussion and Reflection (10 minutes)

Facilitate a class discussion reflecting on what procedures were most important and why.
Prompt students to consider how they would prepare themselves and others in an emergency.
Connect back to ELA standards by asking students how different media (e.g., verbal instructions, signs, emergency alerts) might affect the clarity of emergency communications.

6. Formative Assessment and Closing (5 minutes)

Quick write: Each student writes a short paragraph answering: "What is one new thing you learned today about emergency procedures, and why will it help you in real life?"
Collect index card evacuation plans and quick writes for review.
Summarize key points, remind students to review school-wide safety signs and protocol during the week.

Differentiation Strategies

Provide printed scripts for role-playing for students who may need structured language support.
Use visual aids, charts, and maps for students who learn best through visual means.
For students requiring extension, challenge them to research local emergency resources in their community or create a PSA poster for safe evacuations.

Evaluate student participation in role-plays and group discussions to gauge understanding.
Review evacuation plans for critical thinking and feasibility.
