Lesson Timeline
1. Do Now (5 minutes)
Activity: Image-Word Matching Worksheet
- Students receive a worksheet with 10 pictures of food items in random order on the left, and 10 Spanish food vocabulary words scrambled on the right.
- Task: Draw lines connecting each image to the matching Spanish word.
- Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and introduce vocabulary visually.
- Teacher circulates to assist and note students who may need extra support.
2. Introduction (7 minutes)
Activity: Teacher-led Vocabulary Presentation
- Display each food image via projector or flashcards with the Spanish word below.
- Pronounce each word slowly and clearly, having students repeat chorally and then individually.
- Incorporate total physical response: for example, hold up an apple when saying manzana.
- Highlight cognates and gender patterns when applicable to deepen understanding.
3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Activity: Paired Vocabulary Matching Game
- Students work in pairs with sets of printed flashcards separated into images and words.
- Task: Spread cards face down, take turns flipping one image card and one word card at a time, trying to find matching pairs.
- After a successful match, partners say the Spanish word aloud together.
- Teacher monitors pairs and offers corrective pronunciation and feedback.
- Extension: Once pairs match all cards, challenge them to use 1-2 vocabulary words in simple Spanish sentences (e.g., Me gusta el queso.).
4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)
Activity: Write and Draw
- In notebooks or on individual whiteboards, students write 5 new Spanish food words they remember.
- Next to each word, they draw a quick, simple sketch of the food item.
- Teacher circulates, checks spelling and offers pronunciation encouragement.
5. Exit Ticket (8 minutes)
Activity: Recall and Write
- On small slips of paper, students write down three food items they learned today in Spanish.
- Collect exit tickets to assess vocabulary acquisition and guide review for next lesson.
- Ask 2-3 volunteers to share their words aloud before dismissal for formative speaking practice.
Differentiation Strategies
- Provide picture-word bilingual dictionaries or vocabulary lists for English learners or struggling students.
- Challenge advanced learners to write short sentences describing food preferences using vocabulary (e.g., Me gusta el arroz y el pollo).
- Use peer tutoring to support students needing additional practice.
Assessment
- Formative: Ongoing teacher observation during paired activity and pronunciation practice; Do Now worksheet accuracy.
- Summative (informal): Exit ticket vocabulary recall capturing individual retention.
- Feedback given immediately during activities to correct pronunciation and spelling.
Extensions & Home Connection
- Encourage students to ask family members about their favorite foods in Spanish and bring one new word to share next class.
- Suggest simple food-related apps or websites for additional vocabulary practice outside class.
By combining visual supports, interactive play, and writing, this lesson maximizes engagement and retention while meeting CCSS reading, writing, speaking, and vocabulary building standards in an authentic language context.
