This Career Connections video is meant to be the tool that introduces your students to STEM careers and the 21st century skills needed to succeed in those fields. These include, but aren’t limited to, creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and technology skills. Discuss the following questions with students. These questions can be posed during the Explore activities while you monitor groups. The questions can also be used after the Explore activities and discussed as a whole group or within each student group. This is an excellent writing opportunity for students to use interactive notebooks as well. After discussing the questions, view the video and discuss if any of the students’ answers have changed.

21st Century Skill: What skill could be used with this career? Identify at least one skill that was seen in the video presentation.
Guiding Questions: What do you think an eye doctor does?
Talk with your partner to see if you think light travels in a straight line, in waves, or a combination of both. Explain your reasoning.
Do you think your shadow from the Sun is the same during the day, no matter what time you go outside? Why or why not?
Do you think it is important for an eye doctor to use light when they are looking at your eyes? Why or why not?
Is this a career you are interested in? Ask an adult to help you arrange an interview with an eye doctor or research the career on the internet.

By the end of this 20-minute session, students will be able to:
Introduction (2 min):
Begin by asking students: "What do you think an eye doctor does?" Write responses on chart paper. Encourage students to share with a partner first, then with the whole class to practice communication (CCSS.SL.1.1).
