Lesson Flow
1. Circle Reflection & Introduction (10 minutes)
- Teacher Role: Gather students in a circle to maintain a community feel in line with Reggio Emilia’s focus on collaboration and environment as the third teacher.
- Ask guiding questions:
- “What farming systems did we explore?”
- “How do these farming systems affect what we eat, the earth, and our communities?”
- Encourage students to share verbally or through gestures. Use visuals to support ideas.
- Teacher records key student words on chart paper for reference.
Differentiation: Students with language or reading difficulties use picture cards to aid expression.
2. Reflection Journal Creation (20 minutes)
- Students create their own reflection journals with a combination of drawing and writing expressing:
- What they learned about farming systems.
- Why caring for the earth matters in farming.
- How farming systems connect to their own community or family food habits.
- Use sentence starters and dyslexia-friendly sheets to scaffold writing.
- Encourage multi-modal reflections (drawing, labeling, bullet points, short sentences).
- Teacher circulates to confer and support, posing open-ended questions like “What surprised you?” or “How might farming look different in the future?”
Differentiation: Provide audio recording devices or allow voice recordings for students who struggle with writing.
3. Peer Sharing & Gallery Walk (15 minutes)
- Students pair up or form small groups to share their journals aloud, explaining their reflections.
- Encourage questions and affirmations using sentence stems like “I like how you...”, “I wonder about...”.
- After sharing, students arrange their reflection pages on the classroom walls for a gallery walk.
- Whole class walks through quietly, observing different reflections, leaving sticky note compliments or questions.
Differentiation: Use peer buddies for social/emotional support during sharing.
4. Group Discussion and Synthesis (10 minutes)
- Reassemble in circle. Teacher facilitates synthesis by connecting the different reflections back to the central idea and key concepts.
- Highlight how students’ reflections deepen understanding beyond facts—connecting personal responsibility and care for community health.
- Co-create with students the success criteria based on their reflections and learning process to foster ownership and metacognition.
5. Closure and Next Steps (5 minutes)
- Teacher offers an advanced extension prompt for early finishers or advanced learners:
- “Imagine you are a farmer of the future. Write or draw one new way you would protect the earth while growing food.”
- Set a gentle homework invitation (optional): bring a photo or drawing of a farm or garden to share during the next lesson.
- Thank students for their thoughtful participation and reflection.
