Lesson Procedures

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (10 minutes)

Begin with a brief Brainstorm: “What causes most household fires?” Document responses on the board.
Show a short engaging video or animation about fire safety basics and fire prevention.
Introduce key vocabulary: fire prevention, fire extinguisher types (A, B, C), smoke detectors, evacuation plans.

Teacher Tip: Use questioning strategies to activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.

2. Direct Instruction & Demonstration (15 minutes)

Explain the common causes of fires (cooking, electrical, heating equipment, careless smoking).
Describe prevention strategies: keeping flammable items away from heat sources, regular electrical checks, safe smoking habits.
Demonstrate how to identify and use a fire extinguisher using the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
Present the role and working principle of smoke detectors: how they detect smoke and why batteries must be checked frequently.

Teacher Note: If a real extinguisher demonstration isn't possible, use a virtual simulation or video with step-by-step guidance.

3. Guided Practice - Scenario Analysis (15 minutes)

Divide the class into groups of 5.
Give each group a fire safety scenario card (examples: kitchen fire, electrical fire, bedtime smoke detector alarm).
Groups discuss: What mistakes were made? How could fire have been prevented? How should they respond?
Each group shares one prevention or preparedness takeaway with the class.

Focus: Encourage reasoning and application of safety principles learned.

4. Collaborative Activity - Create a Fire Safety Infographic (15 minutes)

Each group creates a visual infographic poster encapsulating important fire safety tips, correct fire extinguisher use, and smoke detector importance.

Groups will present their posters briefly, practicing clear communication and explanation.

5. Closing & Assessment (5 minutes)

Summarize key points: importance of fire prevention, how to use an extinguisher, and maintaining smoke detectors.
