Materials Needed
- Pre-cut shape templates in different colors (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, cubes, spheres).

- Clipboards with shape viewing checklist (simple checklist with shapes and attributes).
- Markers and crayons.
Lesson Procedure
1. Welcome & Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge of shapes and encourage participation.
- Circle Time Discussion: Teacher shows each 2D and 3D shape flashcard one by one.
- Students will say the name of each shape aloud and share where they have seen these shapes before.
- Ask guided questions such as:
- “Can a triangle be blue and still be a triangle?”
- “What makes a rectangle different from a square?”
Teacher Tip: Use exaggerated gestures, and colorful flashcards to engage attention.
2. Shape Attribute Sorting (20 minutes)
Objective: Recognize and describe shape properties, following CCSS standard K.G.B.4 & 1.G.A.1.
- Each student receives a set of shape templates.
- Students group shapes by attributes (e.g., number of sides, corners, length of sides).
- Teacher prompts them to describe attributes: “How many sides does a triangle have? Are all the sides the same size?”
- Record their responses on the board.
Differentiate: For younger or emerging learners, focus on simple attribute grouping (e.g., shapes with 3 sides vs. 4 sides). For others, discuss differences like equal sides or angles.
3. Shape Collage Creation (25 minutes)
Objective: Create a hands-on geometry art project solidifying understanding of shape attributes (CCSS 1.G.A.1 & 2.G.A.1).
- Students glue shapes onto poster board creating a collaborative “Shape World” collage.
- Encourage creativity: build houses with squares and triangles, suns with circles, etc.
- While working, ask descriptive questions:
- “How many triangles did you use for your roof?”
- “Is your circle bigger than your square?”
- After completion, each student shares their favorite part of the collage and explains why based on the shapes used.
Incorporate Technology Tip: Use a classroom camera or tablet to take photos of the collage, then print and label shapes digitally for display.
4. Shape Hunt & Checklist (20 minutes)
Objective: Apply shape knowledge in real-world surroundings (CCSS K.G.A.2).
- Give students simple clipboards with a shape checklist and crayons/markers.
- Students explore the classroom to find objects that match shapes on their list (e.g., clock = circle, book = rectangle).
- They mark off shapes found and write the name or draw the object.
- Regroup and discuss discoveries. Students describe objects and name their shapes aloud.
5. Reflection & Assessment (15 minutes)
Objective: Assess understanding and verbalize geometric knowledge.
- One-on-one assessment with each student:
- Teacher shows mixed shapes and asks the student to name it and describe its attributes.
- “Tell me how many sides or corners this shape has.”
- “Can you find an object nearby that looks like this shape?”
- Collect their collage sheets and checklist as formative assessments.
- Encourage self-assessment: “Which shape was easiest to find today? Which one did you like the most?”
