Hearing Exploration

Curriculum Area and Level

Subject: Science
Grade: Kindergarten Preschool
Relevant Standards: Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) - K-PS2-1 (Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions)

Duration

15 Minutes

Objective

Students will develop an understanding of how they use their sense of hearing to explore and understand the world around them.

Materials Needed

  • Variety of objects/items that produce sound (e.g., bell, shaker, drum, keys, etc.)
  • Blindfolds (enough for half the class)
  • Large poster board
  • Markers
  • Sound recording device (optional, such as a phone or tablet)

Lesson Procedure

Introduction (3 Minutes)

  1. Greeting: Gather the students in a circle on the carpet or rug area. Use a friendly and engaging tone to make the children feel comfortable.
  2. Question: Start by saying, "Good morning, friends! Can anyone tell me one of the ways we know what is going on around us, if we can't see it?"
  3. Discussion: Allow a few students to raise their hands and share their thoughts.
  4. Introduction to the Topic: Say, "Today, we are going to use our ears to explore sounds! Hearing is one of our five senses, and it helps us learn about things that are far away or hidden."

Main Activity (10 Minutes)

  1. Blindfolded Sound Exploration (5 Minutes)

    • Setup: Half of the students will wear blindfolds while the other half remains without blindfolds.
    • Instructions for Sound-makers: The non-blindfolded students will take turns using the various sound-producing objects.
    • Instructions for Listeners: The blindfolded students will listen and try to identify the sounds they hear.
    • Rotation: After a couple of minutes, rotate the roles so that everyone gets a turn to be both a sound-maker and a listener.
  2. Sound Chart (5 Minutes)

    • Display a large poster board divided into sections for each sound they heard.
    • Discussion & Charting: Ask the students to describe the sounds they heard and match them with the objects. Write or doodle the objects on the chart.
    • Ask questions like, "What made the bell sound? How about the shaker?" to reinforce the relationship between objects and sounds.

Conclusion (2 Minutes)

  1. Recap: Bring the class together again in a circle. Recap briefly by asking, "Can anyone tell me what we learned about hearing today?"
  2. Closing Activity: If time permits, use the sound recording device to play a miscellaneous sound (e.g., animal sound, vehicle horn, etc.) and see if the children can recognize the sound.
  3. Farewell: End with a cheerful, "Wow, you all did an excellent job using your ears today! Great job, everyone. See you next time!"

Assessment

  • Observation: Monitor students’ participation and excitement during the blindfolded sound exploration activity.
  • Questioning: Ask students questions about what they learned and observed throughout the activity.

Notes for Differentiation

  • Advanced Learners: Encourage them to describe sounds in more detail (pitch, volume, duration).
  • Struggling Learners: Offer additional support by repeating sounds more than once and providing hints.

This lesson plan ensures engagement through interactive and sensory activities tailored specifically to kindergarten preschoolers, fostering their curiosity and understanding of the sense of hearing through play and exploration.
