Lesson Activities

1. Warm-Up Discussion (10 minutes)

• Begin by asking students to share any experiences where they noticed something unsafe in places they frequent (home, school, neighborhood).
• Record responses on the board, categorizing them (e.g., physical hazards, chemical hazards, behavioral hazards).
• Briefly explain what a hazard is and why awareness is key in preventing accidents.

2. Visual Hazard Identification Activity (20 minutes)

• Divide students into small groups of 5.
• Provide each group with different images depicting settings like a cluttered kitchen, playground, school hallway, or street corner.
• Groups will identify and list all potential hazards they discover using a safety checklist as a guide (e.g., wet floors, exposed wires, broken glass, traffic signs missing).
• Each group selects one hazard to explain how it could cause harm and ways it could be reported or fixed.

3. Interactive Role-Play (15 minutes)

• Select volunteers to role-play scenarios where they find a hazard. Examples:
• Student sees a frayed electrical cord in the classroom.
• A hazard on the sidewalk in the neighborhood.
• Role-players demonstrate appropriate responses including whom to report to and what information to share.
• Class provides feedback on communication techniques and appropriateness of response.

4. Reflective Writing and Sharing (10 minutes)

• Individually, students write a brief paragraph about:
• One new hazard they learned to recognize today.
• Why reporting hazards matters to their safety and the community.
• Volunteers share their reflections aloud, reinforcing communication standards.

5. Closing and Exit Ticket (5 minutes)

• Summarize key points about hazard identification and reporting.
• Students complete a quick exit ticket listing two hazards they might encounter at school and one action they would take.
