Objective

By the end of this 10-minute session, the student will be able to correctly identify and match lowercase letters to their corresponding uppercase letters with 90% accuracy, aligning with the Common Core standards for foundational reading skills.

Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-up: Letter Review (2 minutes)

• Begin with a quick verbal review of the alphabet, emphasizing the uppercase letters.
• Show flashcards randomly and ask the student to name the letter aloud.

2. Activity: Lowercase Matching Game (5 minutes)

• Present a set of uppercase letter cards in a row.
• Mix lowercase letter cards and ask the student to pick and place the correct lowercase card beneath its uppercase pair.
• For each correct match, prompt the student to verbally say the letter name and its sound (e.g., "A, /a/").
• Gently guide through mismatches by modeling the correct answer and having the student repeat.
• Use encouragement and positive reinforcement with verbal praise.

3. Writing Practice & Assessment (3 minutes)

• Show one uppercase letter from the match set.
• Ask the student to write the matching lowercase letter on the whiteboard or sheet.
• Repeat for 3-4 different letters.
• Note accuracy to track mastery.

Assessment and Follow-up

• Observe the student's ability to match letters and produce sounds.
• Record the number of correct matches and writing attempts.
• For next lessons, focus on letters with which the student struggled to build mastery.

Extension Idea (If time permits)

• Use the matched letters to form simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words orally.
• Ask the student to identify which lowercase letters appear in the word and underline them on the worksheet.
