Teaching Instructions

I want the topic to be on this: Premiere Pro has a toolbar (near the middle bottom of the screen, to the left of the Timeline.) These are the tools you will use to perform any task in Adobe Premiere. Click and hold on a tool’s button to see alternate tools. (The keyboard shortcut is to the left of the tool name - use these!) Selection tool (V) The Selection tool performs basic selections and edits. You can select and move clips, change audio and video levels, and perform simple trims. Click and drag around clips (or hold shift and click on clips) to select multiple clips at once. Track Select Forward (A) / Backward (Shift-A) This tool will let you quickly select all of the clips in a sequence, either forward (after the selected clip) or backwards (before the selected clip). It will not select clips in locked tracks. If you hold shift when clicking on a clip, the tool will select only one track instead of all tracks. Ripple Edit (B) Ripple Edit is a trim tool, used to trim a clip and “ripple” the rest of the clips in the timeline, effectively closing the gap between the two edit points created by trimming the clip (or moving all subsequent clips forward when lengthening a clip). Razor (C) Using the Razor adds slices the clip wherever you click the tool. Holding shift while using the Razor will cut clips at that point across all unlocked tracks. Slip Tool (Y) The Slip tool “slips” the clip source’s in and out point, but doesn’t move the clip in the timeline. While using the Slip tool, the program monitor gives you a preview of the frame just before and after the clips in and out points Pen Tool (P) The Pen tool allows you to add keyframes to the audio or video of a clip. This allows you to fade audio in/out, change the opacity of a video clip, and more. Hand (H) Use the Hand tool to navigate forward and backward on the timeline by clicking and dragging. Type (T) Allows you to add and alter text in your video. (V) (A) (B) (C) (Y) (P) (H) (T) Other useful shortcuts (i) - Set in point | (o) - Set out point (s) - Toggle snapping, a feature that “snaps” clips into place as you move them. (ctrl-z) - Undo your most recent action (j) - play the selected clip backwards | (k) - pause the selected clip | (l) - play the selected clip Basic Tools 3

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the function of key Adobe Premiere Pro toolbar tools, using correct keyboard shortcuts.
  • Execute basic editing tasks in Premiere Pro such as selecting, trimming, cutting, slipping clips, and adding keyframes with precision.
  • Demonstrate understanding of timeline navigation and text addition using Premiere Pro tools.
  • Apply the editing tools to create a seamless video clip segment, incorporating keyframes and text overlays.

Standards Alignment (Common Core State Standards)

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.11-12.3
Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks, attending to special cases or exceptions defined in the text.
(Aligned with precise use of Premiere Pro tool shortcuts and multiple editing steps.)

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.1
Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on technical topics, expressing ideas clearly and persuasively.
(Aligned with peer collaboration and explanation of tool use in video editing.)

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.2
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex technical processes clearly and accurately.
(Aligned with video editing workflow and applying technical tools accurately.)

Materials Needed

  • Computers with Adobe Premiere Pro installed (one per student)
  • Projector or screen for teacher demonstration
  • Pre-loaded footage clips and audio tracks for practice
  • Handout summarizing tools and shortcuts (printed)
  • Headphones for each student (for audio editing)

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction & Objective Setting (3 minutes)

  • Briefly explain the lesson focus: mastering the Adobe Premiere Pro toolbar tools essential for video editing.
  • Display the toolbar area near the middle bottom left of the timeline on the screen. Highlight each tool with their icon, name, and shortcut key.
  • Emphasize importance of shortcuts for efficient editing.

2. Teacher Demonstration (7 minutes)

  • Live demo in Premiere Pro showing each tool’s function:
    • Selection Tool (V): select, move clips, multi-select with shift
    • Track Select Forward/Backward (A / Shift-A): demonstrate with multi-track sequences
    • Ripple Edit (B): trim with ripple effect to close gaps
    • Razor (C): cut single and multiple tracks using shift
    • Slip Tool (Y): slip clip source points, show preview
    • Pen Tool (P): add audio fade keyframes and video opacity changes
    • Hand Tool (H): demonstrate timeline navigation
    • Type Tool (T): add text overlay, change font size
  • Show other shortcuts briefly: (i) in point, (o) out point, (s) toggle snapping, ctrl-z undo, jkl for playback

3. Guided Student Practice (10 minutes)

  • Students open Premiere Pro and load pre-provided project files.
  • Follow step-by-step instructions to:
    1. Select and move clips using Selection Tool (V) and multi-select with shift
    2. Use Track Select Forward (A) to select all clips after a certain point
    3. Apply Ripple Edit (B) to trim a clip and close the gap automatically
    4. Razor (C) cut clips on multiple tracks holding shift
    5. Slip tool (Y) on a clip and observe frame preview changes
    6. Use Pen tool (P) to add fade in/out audio keyframes
    7. Navigate timeline with Hand tool (H)
    8. Add a title using Type tool (T), customize text
  • Teacher circulates, offering individual support, checking shortcut usage and clipping accuracy.

4. Collaborative Peer Review (5 minutes)

  • In pairs, students briefly explain one tool and its shortcut to each other.
  • Each pair discusses how the tool could improve storytelling/pacing in their video.
  • Emphasis on clear communication and application.

5. Reflection & Exit Ticket (5 minutes)

  • Students individually write a quick 3-4 sentence response on:
    • Which tool they found most useful and why
    • One shortcut key they will remember and how it speeds up editing
  • Collect exit tickets for informal formative assessment.

Assessment

  • Formative assessment through observation during practice, focusing on correct tool use and shortcut keys.
  • Exit ticket responses analyzed for understanding and ability to explain tool function and shortcut relevance.
  • Peer review participation gauges communication skills aligned with CCSS SL.11-12.1.

Differentiation & Extensions

  • Struggling students: Provide a visual toolbar shortcut cheat sheet; offer one-on-one coaching during guided practice.
  • Advanced learners: Challenge to combine several tools in sequence, e.g., razor cut + slip + ripple edit + keyframing opacity for a creative clip transition.
  • Extension: Create a mini tutorial video explaining one Premiere tool and shortcut, practicing technical communication skills.

Teacher Tips

  • Encourage students to memorize shortcuts gradually — knowing one hint can dramatically save time.
  • Connect tool functions to storytelling decisions: How does cutting or slipping change viewer experience?
  • Use real-world editing terms when possible to prepare students for media careers or advanced courses.
  • Incorporate frequent short checks (thumbs up/down) for engagement and instant feedback.

This highly targeted lesson engages 11th graders with hands-on Adobe Premiere Pro toolbar mastery while developing technical communication, critical thinking, and procedural competency — 100% aligned with Common Core standards in literacy and technical skills.
