Teaching Instructions

This is the first week of school I am teaching math to 7th grade sped students that struggle in basic math and I am wanting a fun interactive lesson plan for the first week of school to understand these students better to know what each is needing help in.

Overview

Students begin the year with a low-pressure, hands-on investigation of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and negative numbers. The teacher observes how each student reads directions, explains thinking, uses strategies, and records work while building relationships and identifying individual support needs.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and “Math Detective” hook. Teacher opens with the mystery scenario and learning goals and says, “Today is not a test; I am learning how you think so I can help you grow.” Students choose a colored marker or small object and answer a quick question: “What is something you already know how to do in math?”

  2. 5–12 min · Number-line warm-up. Teacher places a floor or desk number line from −5 to 5 and models one example, thinking aloud without correcting every error. Students share one strategy they used, complete the prompt “One math skill I can use is…” and rate their confidence from 1 to 5. The teacher collects the slips and closes by naming one strength noticed in each student.
