This is lesson 1 of 26 in the unit "Kindergarten Math Explorers". Lesson Title: Math Talk and Counting Lesson Description: Build mathematical language through one-to-one counting, recognizing quantities, and explaining strategies with objects. Aligns with CCSS K.CC.A.1–3.
In this first lesson of Kindergarten Math Explorers, the student builds mathematical language while practicing one-to-one counting, recognizing small quantities, and explaining how they know. The lesson begins with familiar counting routines and develops toward representing quantities with objects, drawings, and numerals.
Students will be able to:
0–8 min · Welcome and counting hook. Teacher opens the counting hook and learning intention and displays a picture of scattered objects, asking, “How many do you think there are, and how could we find out?” Students make a quick estimate, then count aloud together to 20 while moving one finger for each number.
8–18 min · Model one-to-one counting. Teacher places 8 counters in a line, models touching each counter once, and thinks aloud: “I counted each object one time. The last number tells how many.” Students count the counters with the teacher, then explain what the teacher did to count accurately.
18–28 min · Count and describe quantities. Teacher presents groups of 0–10 counters in different arrangements using the quantity pictures and counting prompts and asks, “How many? How do you know?” Students count each group, identify whether it has more, fewer, or no objects when appropriate, and explain their strategy using the sentence frame, “I know there are ___ because ___.”
28–40 min · Start from a given number. Teacher uses the start-and-keep-counting prompts to show a number such as 4, 7, or 12, then asks the student to continue counting forward without starting at 1. The student practices counting on from several starting numbers, using a number path or counters if needed; the teacher pauses to ask, “What number comes next?” and “How did you keep track?”
40–53 min · Represent and record quantities. Teacher distributes the counting and numeral practice page and provides counters. The student counts pictured or teacher-created groups, draws a matching representation, and writes the numeral from 0 to 20. For selected examples, the student explains the match between the objects and numeral. The teacher includes one empty set so the student can connect zero with no objects.
53–60 min · Math talk exit check. Teacher returns to the discussion and closing prompts and asks the student to count a final group, identify its numeral, and count forward from a given number. The student explains one strategy and completes an oral exit response: “Today I learned that when I count, I should ___.”
