Overview

Students investigate how observable and measurable physical properties help identify and classify matter. Working in small groups, they observe and measure classroom objects, record evidence, and use patterns in their data to make a claim about how the objects are alike or different.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

Lesson structure (20 minutes)

  1. 0–3 min · Hook and question. Teacher opens with the matter mystery hook and displays two objects, such as a wooden block and a plastic block, asking, “How could we prove whether these objects are alike or different?” Students silently observe, then share one property they notice with a partner.

  2. 3–6 min · Mini-lesson and modeling. Teacher uses the physical properties teaching slides to explain that matter is anything that takes up space and that physical properties can be observed or measured without making a new substance; teacher models using a metric ruler and hand lens safely. Students help identify properties such as color, shape, texture, length, and mass and repeat the sentence frame, “I observe ___ because ___.”

  3. 6–8 min · Investigation directions. Teacher forms four groups of three or one group of one student with adult support, assigns roles of Tool Manager, Recorder, and Reporter, and demonstrates how to handle materials and return tools. Teacher distributes the physical properties investigation sheet and explains that students will compare two objects using at least two observations and one measurement. Students make a quick prediction about which object will be longer or heavier.

  4. 8–15 min · Observe and measure. Teacher provides each group with two safe classroom objects, such as a pencil, craft stick, cotton ball, plastic cube, or wooden block, and circulates to prompt precise observations and check tool use. Students use a hand lens, metric ruler, and, if available, a digital scale to observe, measure, and record properties on the worksheet; groups may compare objects without touching if a student has a sensory need.

  5. 15–18 min · Data discussion and claim. Teacher returns to the compare-and-explain discussion slide and asks, “Which property gave you the strongest evidence?” and “What pattern do you see?” Students compare group data, complete the sentence “Our objects are alike/different because ___,” and support the claim with one recorded observation or measurement.

  6. 18–20 min · Exit check and close. Teacher displays the exit question slide and asks students to answer independently on the bottom of the physical properties investigation sheet: “Name one physical property and explain how you could observe or measure it.” Students share one response as the teacher collects the sheets.

Assessment

  • During the hook and mini-lesson, listen for students distinguishing an observation from a guess and use questioning to check understanding of physical properties.

  • Use the exit response to identify whether each student can name a physical property and connect it to observing or measuring. Accept spoken, pointed, drawn, dictated, or AAC-supported responses.

Differentiation

  • For special education students, preview the objects and tools before the investigation, provide a visual sequence of “Look—Choose a tool—Measure—Record,” and reduce the task to two clearly modeled properties if needed.
  • Provide sentence starters: “I notice ___,” “The ruler shows ___ centimeters,” “The objects are alike because ___,” and “The objects are different because ___.” Use an enlarged worksheet with fewer writing spaces and picture-supported property choices.
  • Pair students intentionally and offer roles that match strengths. A student may point while a partner records, dictate an observation, use speech-to-text, or select from prepared word cards.
  • Support EAL students with gestures, real objects, labeled visuals, and repeated terms such as property, observe, measure, compare, length, and mass. Challenge ready students to classify three objects and explain which property is most useful for their classification.
