Teaching Instructions

This element is designed to be led by an instructor or parent to support student understanding. Description Students will be able to measure the length of an object by using counting cubes and compare the size of 2 objects based on their measurements. Preparation Students will need a printed copy of the Student Handout to complete the activity. Decide on a grouping format, or have students work individually. Work through the student activity. Prepare guiding questions and possible student answers before beginning this activity in order to interpret student preconceptions. Some examples of guiding questions are as follows: What are some sources of light you use at home? Does the Sun’s light change during the day? Be prepared to use and explain key terms, such as: shorter, longer, comparing, light, length, and longest. Common Core Connections 1.MD.A.2 - Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. 1.MD.A.1 - Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object. 1.MD.C.4 - Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another. QUESTION 1 The Sun was setting on a late Sunday afternoon. Some of the light was blocked by a tree, which caused a shadow to appear on the ground. Use counting cubes to measure the length of the shadow. Write the answer below.

QUESTION 2 Allyson and her friends went to a laser-light show. They saw many different-colored laser lights. Look at the light beams below. Circle the laser that has the longest beam of light. Draw an X on the beam with the shortest beam of light.
