Money's Role Today

Overview

In this 30-minute lesson, 1st graders will explore the role of money in everyday life by engaging in a hands-on activity where they use play money to purchase goods and services. This interactive experience will help them understand why money is needed and how it facilitates buying what we want and need.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Explain the purpose of money in buying goods and services.
• Demonstrate use of money to exchange for goods or services within a simulated setting.
• Identify examples of goods and services they can buy with money.

Although Common Core State Standards (CCSS) primarily focus on English Language Arts and Math, the following CCSS reinforce this social studies lesson by supporting literacy and numeracy skills within the context of real-world understanding:

English Language Arts (ELA)
