Objective
By the end of this 30-minute lesson, Robbie will be able to solve multi-step word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers up to 10,000. Robbie will demonstrate understanding by accurately choosing and applying the correct operations and explaining his reasoning.

Lesson Breakdown
1. Warm-Up & Review (5 minutes)
- Greet Robbie and quickly review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with numbers up to 100.
- Use number cards to display random numbers (up to 10,000) and ask Robbie to state strategies he knows for addition or subtraction quickly.
- Discuss place value briefly when working with larger numbers, reinforcing CCSS 3.NBT.A.2.
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and build confidence with large-number operations.
2. Introduction to Multi-Step Word Problems (5 minutes)
- Explain that many real-life problems need more than one operation to solve.
- Model a two-step word problem on the whiteboard using all four operations:
Example: "Robbie has 2,345 marbles. He buys 1,234 more, then gives away 1,000 marbles. How many marbles does he have now?"
- Think aloud to decide the order of operations (addition first, then subtraction). Write the equation with a letter for the unknown if helpful: M = 2,345 + 1,234 - 1,000.
- Emphasize explaining choices before solving.
Purpose: Demonstrate strategy and process for tackling multi-step problems.
3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Present 3 different two-step word problems one at a time, varying operations and numbers (all up to 10,000). Include multiplication by multiples of 10 where applicable per 3.NBT.A.3. Example problems:
- "A baker made 4,000 cookies. He sold 1,200 cookies in the morning and 2,300 cookies in the afternoon. How many cookies are left?" (Subtraction, subtraction)
- "Robbie planted 30 rows of trees with 40 trees in each row. Then he removed 250 sick trees. How many trees are healthy now?" (Multiplication, subtraction)
- "A library has 9,600 books. They divide the books equally on 8 shelves. Then they receive 1,200 new books. How many books are there in total?" (Division, addition)

For each problem:
- Read aloud the problem slowly.
- Ask Robbie to underline key numbers and operations.
- Prompt him to choose and write an equation with a letter for the unknown if he can.
- Have Robbie solve the problem aloud, explaining his thought process as he goes.
- Provide immediate feedback and encouragement.
Purpose: Hands-on practice with scaffolding and modeling to solidify understanding.
4. Independent Application & Reflection (7 minutes)
- Give Robbie one fresh multi-step problem similar in complexity:
Example: "Robbie had 3,500 baseball cards. He bought 1,200 more, then sorted them evenly into 10 boxes. How many cards are in each box?"
- Set a timer for 5 minutes to encourage time management without pressure.
- After solving, have Robbie explain the steps he took and why he picked each operation. Record his verbal explanation or write it together.
- Ask: "How did breaking the problem into steps help? Which operation did you use first and why?"
Purpose: Promote independent problem-solving and metacognitive reflection.
5. Wrap-Up and Assessment (3 minutes)
- Review the key takeaways:
- Identify key numbers and clues in word problems.
- Decide which operations to apply first in multi-step problems.
- Use equations with letters to represent unknown quantities.
- Ask Robbie to summarize the process of solving multi-step problems in his own words.
- Provide positive reinforcement and set a personal math goal, e.g., "Next time, I will include the equation with the unknown letter in every problem I solve."
