My Chinese New Year

Overview

In this final session of our unit "Celebrating Chinese New Year," 1st graders will creatively express their understanding of the celebration by writing and sharing short personal stories. Students will integrate cultural elements studied in previous lessons and practice foundational writing and speaking skills aligned with Common Core standards. The 30-minute lesson is designed for a small class of 8 students to ensure personalized feedback and active participation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

• Write a simple narrative recounting their experience or understanding of Chinese New Year, including at least two cultural elements learned from the unit.
• Use temporal words to sequence events (e.g., first, next, last).
• Spell grade-appropriate words phonetically and use capitalization and punctuation.
• Present their story aloud, practicing clear pronunciation and volume suitable for the class setting.
